Obituary of John Donahue
John J. Donahue, a resident of Burlington for over 50 years, passed away at the Woodbriar of Wilmington Nursing Center on Thursday morning, October 7, 2010. The husband of the late Margaret “Marge” (Whalen) he was 95 years old.
John was born, raised and educated in Cambridge. He was the son of the late John and Celia Donahue. John was a graduate of Ringe Tech in Cambridge and was the President of his graduating class. John was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the United States Navy. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre and Point System. John went on to work at General Electric in Lynn and Wilmington where he had a successful career as an Electrical Inspector of aircraft instrumentation.
John and his wife Marge settled in Burlington in 1959 where they raised their two sons. John and Marge had a wonderful relationship and marriage. They were married 63years when Marge passed away in 2005. They did everything together as a couple. They enjoyed traveling together and had visited such locations as Bermuda, Las Vegas and California. They also had a great group of friends that they enjoyed socializing with. John was a Boston sports fan and especially enjoyed following the red sox and the Celtics. John’s two sons were a very important part of his life as well as his grandchildren and great grandchild.
John was the beloved husband of the late Margaret “Marge” (Whalen). He was the loving father of John J. Jr. of Burlington and Thomas F. & his wife Catherine of Weymouth. Brother of the late Helen McCabe and William & Francis Donahue. Grandfather of Christian Donaruma, Kelly Donahue, Tracie Donahue & Michelle Curtiss. Great Grandfather of Lilly Marie Curtiss. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 4-6 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Donations may be made to John’s favorite charity: Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
