Obituary of James McCarthy
James J. McCarthy, a resident of Burlington for 42 years, passed away at Sunrise of Burlington, on Friday evening, November 19, 2010. The husband of the late Barbara (Hyett) he was 91 years old.
Jim was born and raised in East Boston. He was one of six children born to Irish immigrants the late Patrick and Margaret McCarthy. Jim was a graduate of East Boston High School where he was the Captain of his High School Baseball team. He went on to graduate from Bentley College. He had a very successful career as an Auditor and Accountant in the Health Care Industry. He retired from Somerville Hospital where he was the Controller. He had also worked as a Senior Financial Officer at Peter Brent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Jim had a wealth of knowledge in the financial field and had worked with diverse industries over his career.
Jim was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church in Burlington. He attended the 6:45 a.m. daily Mass and the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning. He was a member of the Wakefield Retired Men’s Club where he would provide free assistance to businesses on financial matters. He was an avid gardener. Jim was a Boston sports fan enjoying most especially baseball. It wasn’t unusual for Jim to see a youth baseball game at the park and he would stop to watch the game in its purest form. Since he didn’t have any children and was a bachelor for many years, he would indulge his many nieces and nephews. The time spent with “Uncle Jim” was always fun and exciting. He took them on outings, spoiled them with gifts, and made each one feel special. They all have lasting memories of their “Uncle Jim”.
Jim was the beloved husband of the late Barbara (Hyett). He was predeceased by his siblings; John McCarthy, Mary Walsh, Charles McCarthy, Margaret Doherty, and Walter McCarthy. He is survived by many dear nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday. Nov. 22 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 2-4 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers memorials in Jim’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
