I first met Arthur back in the 70's when he and I worked at the Colonial Inn in Edgartown. He was the smiling man behind the bar. What a remarkable man he was. His smile and laughter was contagious. I also had the privilege of working with Arthur at MVRHS for 22 years. To say Arthur was special would be an understatement. He loved his students and taught them with kindness, grace, love and laughter. My prayers go out to his family and friends everywhere. We love you Arthur and will miss you, our dear friend.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my friend Arthur upon my return to the island. Arthur was one of those people who always found the humor in little everyday happenings. It was always entertaining to sit in the teachers room for a few minutes with Arthur and just start talking about what was happening. This always led to some ridiculous discussion about something in the news or an incident at school. Nothing was off limits or beyond our ability to poke fun at. Arthur was also one of the first to welcome me to the staff twenty some years ago and he remained a true friend to the end. I will miss you Arthur.

Arthur was my friend and neighbor for 20 years. I can't even begin to tell all the stories of the hilarious times I had hanging out with Art at his little "House of Cormier". More times than not we would sit there crying laughing over silly things like the 1st episode of South Park, Wallace and Grommet, old Saturday night live tapes and eventually dvd's of favorite movies. Art had a way making the already funny truely almost wet your pants hilarious. I will deeply miss calling him up and strolling up the street for a cocktail or two and laughs that would brighten any mood. There has to be a place for souls as good as Arthur's that are taken from us to soon where the sun is always shining and the mood is always happy.

The MVRHS 2010-2011 musical was Willy Wonka. The following is the dedication to Art that was spoken on opening night.
Good evening and welcome.
We are dedicating this show to our dear friend, teacher, actor, and
colleague, Arthur Cormier. I first met Art when I preformed with him in
the production of Lil’ Abner, here at the high school. Arthur has been a
special education teacher here for 32 years and an intricate part of MVRHS
theatre for many, many years, performing in the productions of Brigadoon,
The Fantasticks, Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, and many more. Arthur
inspired me, and others to get involved with the theatre and to work with
young people, of which you will see upon this stage tonight. We truly miss
his sense of humor and his dedication to his students. Arthur, this show
is for you.

To Arthur's Family:
My sincerest condolences. Arthur helped me to learn things in ways no one had the patience to before. I am now a successful businesswoman, and couldn't have come this far without his help when I was in High School. I will always be greatful for his sense of humor, his sincerity, and most of all his love of all people. He never thought of anyone as feeble minded, he never let anyone be down on themselves, and he never let anyone get away with being lazy with their studies or their lives. It saddens me to know that he is no longer with us, but pleases me that he is in a much better place, I'm sure still working miracles.
You all, and Arthur are in my thoughts and prayers.

For those who I might not know or meet, Arthur Cormier was a prince among many. No matter what the difficult challenge or hurdle might be, Arthur would find a way around for his students. Arthur always had a smile, and with joking and total perseverance he would win the day. So many times, Arthur would think of a new way to encourage students. He would fill his classroom with whirligigs and music to make education happen. Arthur could bemuse us with a story while rebuilding the high school day's schedule and shift needed transporation with boundless energy. Arthur was a true humanitarian, helping all he met. I hope that our most precious memories of Arthur will press us all to continue our efforts on behalf of children, especially those with challenges. May Arthur's spirit, shine on!

Though I didn't spend a great deal of time with Arthur during my high school years, I knew him well enough to see that he was a great man with a giant size heart. Quick witted and dapper, always wearing that great smile. It's aweful to lose such a great man so early in life, but the way he lived his life and how it touched others will always be remembered and we are all the better for knowing him. Gone but not forgotten.

We were so fortunate to have met Artie at Bridgewater State. He had such a joie de vivre. He was a kind, generous, and joyful person with the most contagious laugh I have ever heard. His sense of humor was unrivaled. Artie introduced me to Monty Python humor and I have been laughing ever since. With a twinkle in his eyes, he always appeared to be on the edge of some mischief. Over the years, we had visited Artie a few times on MV and each time it was like we were neighbors, his welcome always warm. There are not too many people with the wonderful qualities Artie had. Our condolences to his family and all those whose lives have been touched by this most wonderful man. He will be greatly missed.

With a heavy heart I will sit for a long time to come and
long for my dear friend Arthur to walk up the path. I will drive by his house wanting to see him sitting in the sun room. I will pass by his classroom and hope to hear his voice. But most of all, I will miss just knowing that he is close by and on this journey with me. True friends are one of life's most precious gifts. I will miss the twinkle in his eye and the way his arms flapped and his belly shook when he laughed.
I will miss his silliness and the way he could make me laugh. I will miss my true friend Arthur.

I prayed for nights and nights for a miracle to happen. I heard every couple of days, the news about Arthur. I thought my prayers were not being heard or answered. But I soon found out that they were heard all along. It was a gift to have lived the beginning of my life with Arthur. I know he is never far away and I know I can talk to him every now and then and tell him that I love him. I will never forget him. I will tell him that I love Cappy and I love knowing that he was so happy when we took him. I know that someday I will see him again and dance upon the clouds with him. I wish I could hear his voice calling for my mom on the steps of our house. Telling her that he is so glad that it is Friday. But I am happy that he no longer feels any pain or sorrow. I am sad, however, that he could not have at least enjoyed the last days of his life feeling good. I wish I could have given him one more hug.

Arthur was a huge presence in our lives. His death has shaken us tremendously. We will miss his smiling face with his unique sense of humor, which never failed to light up the situation.
His devotion to his students was legend. Each student who had Arthur has a small piece of their heart missing today, because he touched them so profoundly. Our memories of him in his classes or at lunch; with all of his charges in tow, dispensing real life lessons which are indelibly etched in our collective memory. Arthur’s students will continue to carry these gifts throughout their lives.
It is important for us to honor Arthur’s memory by keeping alive his most precious attributes of Kindness, Patience, Humor and Commitment.

How sweet it is to be friends with Art. Over the past 30 years we spent hours frolicking and laughing, both on and off the Island. His postures, expressions and wit kept all of us laughing, especially Art. From the moment we met it was love at first sight. He welcomed us into his circle of friends, which was a very special place to be. The love and pride he felt for his nieces and nephews were slightly second to love he felt for his Mom & Dad, sisters, brother and brother-in-law. As friends we would listen as the proud uncle would relate all the wonderful deeds of each niece and nephew.
Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Most importantly know much we loved Arthur. We will miss him.
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Arthur was my Uncle and has been a constant in my life as far back as I can remember. No matter who you were, when Uncle Arthur was talking with you, he had a way of making you feel like you were his best friend. I have seen this over and over again with people he had known for years or with a waitress or store clerk that he had never seen before. There was a spark in his eye that made you welcome and that you were a part of his world. This spark that he had was a blessing and through him, a gift to each and every person that ever met him. I have a difficult time recalling ever seeing him without a laugh just waiting to come out. His legacy is this gift, his laughter and just as much a blessing, his friendship. I have been blessed and am thankful that he was my friend too.

I will always refer to Arthur as “my best friend on the Vineyard.” He will forever be in my heart. The joy he brought to his students and colleagues will never be forgotten; he loved each and every one on them. I worked with him for 13 wonderful years; he would visit me daily with one of his “special” students we would laugh and sometimes cry together. But most of all I will remember the movies, dinners, barbecue’s and always knowing he was there for me. He was too young to be taken away from us, but his legacy will live on forever. I was lucky to know him and call him my friend. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family. He spoke about them often and loved them very much. Rest in Peace my friend.

We are truly sorrow to hear of Arthur's passing although certainly have heard of its unfortunate inevitability for a little while now. My wife and I have known him for close to 20 years as I teach with him at the H.S. He was wonderful with his kids and a credit to the high school. I remember to this day beginning my teaching career at age 39 and Arthur going out of his way to be a tremendous help to me. Kind word after kind word, helpful hint after helpful hint. And I remember the early on wonderful Thursday nights culminating in David Donalds house with Jackie and Kenny and all (known to us as DAHVEEDS place!) and his laugh and smiling face.

Wes and I send our sincere condolences to Arthur's loving family. Arthur was our very dear friend, our neighbor, and also my teaching colleague at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.
I have known Arthur for nearly twenty years. He was a dedicated teacher and his students loved him. He had a wonderfully warm way with his students. He ate lunch with his students daily, went on adventures with them, comforted them, and applauded their many successes. Arthur and I worked on the MVRHS yearbook together for several years..I was his apprentice. I sat (along with other colleagues) at many, many school meetings and school workshops with Arthur and he always managed to make those times memorable. Arthur had a great sense of humor and an wonderful laugh as well as a remarkable memory for any vintage music you might inquire about. If you were lucky, he might even sing you a few bars!
Wes and I will miss Arthur. Rest in Peace, Arthur.

Kendal will remember him as "Uncle Arthur" with all the warmth that this unofficial title implies. Clare will have memories of visits during the summer on Martha's Vineyard as well as the entertainment value provided by his bigger than life personality. With him blasting Peter, Paul and Mary "campfire tunes" and Mark Cohn, Walking in Memphis and Silver Cadillac, we would sing along with smiles on our faces. Oh how he loved those tunes!!!!! He seemed to be the Mayor of the Island, as it was virtually impossible to go someplace on MV and for him NOT to be recognized warmly by someone. Mark remembers all the times spent laughing in college, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Boxer. No one enjoyed life and his fellow man more than our dear friend Arthur Cormier. We morn his passing but know that he made the most of his all too short time among us.
We send our condolences to all of his family members and hope that these thoughts will help in some small way to ease the pain of your loss.
Arthur's spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

When I think about all the wonderful things Arthur did for students, I know he achieved something quite special with his life. He leaves behind hundreds of young men and women who were blessed with the opportunity to be taught by Art. I am sure even as I write this, his former students and colleagues are sharing their Arthur stories. He was one of our greatest story-tellers at the high school. He helped all of us--students and teachers--better understand ourselves and our school by the stories he made up about our lives. Even now, whenever it snows, we sort of hear Art's voice saying, "Hey, did you hear? We are all getting dismissed at noon!" Of course, he was making it all up. But we believed him--at least for a few seconds before we'd all laugh. And we believe his accomplishments will remain with us forever.
