Obituary of Vera Fialkosky

Vera Fialkosky was a member of the Women’s Royal Navy Service during WW II. Vera was born and raised in Liverpool England. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Lillian Saunders. At the onset of WW II she joined the Women’s Royal Navy Service (Wrens) to help in the war effort. The Wrens slogan was “Join the Wrens-free a man for the fleet”. She was very proud of her service to her country during some of the darkest times of British history. It was during this period that she met Michael Fialkosky, an American serving in the Army Air Corp. They fell in love and were married at the end of the War. They returned to the United States to begin their life together. They eventually settled in Burlington in 1957. She was a mother, homemaker, as well as a longtime Teller at the Commercial Bank in Burlington. Vera's life after the War revolved around her family, friends, and her church. She was an active parishioner at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Burlington. She was a member of the Council on Aging in Burlington, where she participated in their activities, exercise classes, and trips. Her interests included gardening, knitting, sewing, travel, and crosswords. She was a big sports fan. She was a follower of the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and Boston College. She was a loving and understanding mother, a fun and energetic Gram. She will be remembered by her family for her warmth, kindness, generosity, quick wit, fun expressions, honesty, and love. She will always hold a special place in all their hearts. Vera was the beloved wife of the late Michael Fialkosky. She was the loving mother of Diane Nesbitt & her husband George of Phoenix, AZ and Susan Gucciardi & her husband Richard of Plymouth. She was predeceased by her siblings; Ronald Saunders and Barbara Snelgrove. She was the loving Gram of Erica Billings, Oriana Gucciardi, Tracey Nesbitt, and Jonathan Gucciardi. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, May 4 at 12 Noon. Followed by Funeral Service at the United Church of Christ Congregational at 1 p.m. Visiting hours Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Vera’s name may be made to the United Church of Christ Congregational, 6 Lexington St., Burlington, MA 01803.
