Obituary of William Sweeny
William “Bill” Sweeny, a retired engineer at General Electric passed away at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis on Saturday night, July 30, 2011. He was 77 years old.
Bill was born in Arlington, the son of the late William and Katherine Sweeny. He grew up in Burlington and was a graduate of Burlington High School Class of 1952. Following high school Bill completed the General Electric Apprentice Program. He served his country in the US Army from November of 1956 to November of 1958 as a Specialist First Class. Bill returned to General Electric where he worked for 38 years as an engineer and production manager in their aircraft division of the Riverworks facility. After retirement, Bill had a number of interests and activities including woodworking. He made many family heirlooms including furniture, hope chests, and even his own dinghy. He enjoyed working in his garden. He loved to sail. Over the years he had several sailboats which he named the “Riddle” and the “Talisman” after his daughter. He was a devoted husband to his wife Brenda for over 48 years. He enjoyed being with his family at his summer home in Chatham. Bill was the beloved husband of Brenda A. (Brogna) Sweeny. He was the loving father of William Jr. & his wife Erin of Atkinson, NH, Scott & his wife Jean of Haverhill, and Talisman “Tali” Escott & her husband Kevin of Tyngsboro. He was the brother of Roderick of Lowell. He was the proud grandfather of Shannon, Jeffrey, & Joseph Sweeny and Austin & Daniel Escott.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday, August 4 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. Memorials in Bill’s name may be made to Elder Services of Merrimack Valley, 360 Merrimack St., Building 5, Lawrence, MA 01843.
