Obituary of Maurice Harvey

Maurice J. “Moe” Harvey, a retired Forester passed away after a long illness at his home on Friday morning, August 19, 2011. He was 80 years old. Moe was born in Cambridge, the son of Canadian immigrants, the late Ariste and Helen Harvey. He grew up and was educated in North Cambridge. He proudly served in the Navy for almost 4 years during the Korean War. He served on the USS Wasp. The Wasp patrolled along the shores of Japan and South Korea. The ship extended massive support and was considered one of the leading airplane landing battleships of the time. He was discharged in September of 1954 and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. He was extremely proud of his service to his country and the Navy. After the war, Moe worked as a Forester in the forestry Department of the City of Cambridge. He took pride helping maintain and enhance the parks, trees, and neighborhoods in Cambridge. He had made his home in Burlington for the past 5 years and previously had resided in Somerville. Moe had a number of talents, interests, and activities. He enjoyed cooking, especially during the holidays. He was a talented artist and enjoyed caricatures, cartoons, and portraits. He could make or fix anything. He enjoyed wood carving. He often made his children toys. But he will be remembered for was his devotion to his wife of 59 years, his children, and grandchildren. He was a humble man who often displayed his love and concern through his humor, acts of kindness, and genuine concern for each of his family members. His memory will always bring a smile to those who he loved. Moe was the beloved husband of Barbara M. (Dearborn) Harvey. He was the cherished father of Richard & his wife Gerry of NJ, Cindy Goetz & her husband Eric of Burlington, Ron & his wife Jeannie of CA, Cathy Forte & her husband John of Burlington, Robert of Malden and Christopher & his wife Hanna of Concord. He was the loving grandfather of Ryan, Joshua, Stephen, Justin, Anthony, Shannon, Heather, Derek, Taijah & Maurice. He was predeceased by his siblings; Harris “Sonny”, Norman, Edna Gagnon and Irene Kelly. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday Aug. 22 from 10:30 – 12 Noon. Followed by Funeral Services at 12 Noon. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers memorials in Moe’s name may be made to VNA Care Network & Hospice, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923.
