JACKIE HANLEY - LEAD OFF BATTER
Back in the forties, I was a young pup,
the state champs of softball had their first batter up.
A lefty he bunted, flew down to the base,
the pitcher in vain he tried to give chase.
This guy he bolted like shot from a gun,
never so fast had I seen a man run.
He promptly stole second, third and then home,
a whirlwind in action, much like a cyclone.
Out in left field he flew like the wind,
chasing down long balls and hauling 'em in.
Later in years at a K of C outing,
They picked sides for a game with both captains shouting.
I'll take this one or that as they said who would play,
but nobody picked lefty on that hot summers day.
Just thinking out loud 'bout God's recent plan,
have Hanley lead off, he's my kind of man.
You will be missed, rest in peace.

I am very sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a good friend and brother knight. He worked very hard on behalf of the knights and always put their best interests first. As chairman of the Exceptional Childrens Committee he left me big shoes to fill and an example in helping all where we can. I remember vividly the tears in John's eyes as he presented special tricycles to some children to assist with their physical development. They rode the bikes around with big smiles on their faces. John shared in their joy. He did take great pride in helping all that he could. May he now enjoy the reward of his efforts.
