I just learned of Jim's passing. I express my deep sympathies to his family. I had the pleasure of working with Jim at the Draper Lab, going back to th Apollo days. Jim was a great leader and contributor to all of the Draper programs and made many technology advances. I will miss him at our Equinox lunches.

I briefly worked with Jim when I was at Draper Labs from 1980 through 1983. First as an engineer and then as a mentor when I was a Draper Fellow. He conveyed to me knowledge, expertise and clarity of thought in the field of robotics that I use to this day in my career. I was thinking of him today, decided to look him up and sadly found out about his passing. I will miss him, but his memory will live on. My sincerest sympathy to his family. David B Laning

We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Mabel, Paul, Steven, and Gary, our lake neighbors for 35 years. We have many fond memories of watching Jim windsurfing and sailing his Hobie cat on Lake Winnipesaukee and accidentally meeting while skiing at Waterville Valley. Jim was a major contributor in the governance of Black Cat Island and will be missed by all.

Jim was always friendly to me. I loved to talk with him about Apollo and Shuttle, when I bumped into him at the gym. I'll miss our little conversations.

It was my privilege to work on the Apollo Project, for several years at North American Aviation, and then for nearly a decade at Instrumentation/Draper Labs, where Jim was a significant roll model and creative leader. Thanks Jim - Those were great years!

Cindy and I knew Jim for 40 years. I worked for Jim from 1974 until his retirement. His leadership and guidance were essential for my career. Jim had the clearest eye for research of anyone I met. He went to the essentials and saw what was important. He was also daring in engineering and research endeavors, with results that benefited everyone in his group. He generously shared credit and encouraged everyone to participate at every professional level regardless of rank or background. We were, I think, the first group at the Lab to give everyone business cards.
Jim and I travelled a lot together all over the world and got to be close enough that we occasionally sampled food off each others' plates, something that otherwise I do only with Cindy. I hope my frankness in revealing this does not cause anyone embarrassment but it indicates the extent to which we shared our experiences.
I remember particularly a night in East Germany when we had gone without anything to eat for about 10 hours due to a visa snafu at the border. We had a layover in the East German city of Plauen at 10 pm and I went into the station and used my little German to order to schnitzel sandwiches. The schnitzels were the size of the soles of shoes, between two thick pieces of good black bread, and were the best tasting things we could ever remember eating.
We also are grateful for Jim and Mabel's hospitality at the lake where we spent many enjoyable days and overnights.
We will miss him, and we send our condolences to all of you.

To Mabel, Paul, Steven, Gary & the rest of the extended family our condolences on the passing of Jim.
Though his physical being may have moved on, great memories from his time here with us will persist within us.
For me, these memories include; his firework shows each Fourth Of July on Sunset Drive, his zipline in the back of the house - before ziplines even existed!, his slide shows from places throughout the world that he had visited, his hosting visits to Burlington from Russians, French and other nationalities of people involved in their countries' space programs, his latest & greatest home electronic gadgets (many of which in reality we never really understood all the features), and, of course, times at the Lake House - swimming, boating, canoeing, water skiing, ice skating, fine dining - and so much more...
There are too many anecdotes for this space; however, one I find very much reflective of Jim was his trying to teach me to water ski - and then to slalom ski. In contrast to his prankster nature, his patience, encouragement, and guidance were much appreciated - even though I could never get past the dropping the ski part (without spectacular cartwheels/face plants immediately after). This was juxtaposed with how he towed Paul - speeding up/slowing down, doing 360 degree turns around him, slackening the rope - and essentially challenging Paul to his limits. He read my limits - and pushed me to them - as he did with Paul.
I didn't know Jim outside of his role as a husband and father - but I suspect he was a great mentor for those who needed it - and also was someone to lay down a strong challenge to those who he felt could rise to it, and benefit from that success.
Thanks Jim - for all the great memories.
