Obituary of Eugene McGrath
Eugene “Gene” McGrath a New England Telephone retiree passed away at the Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson New Hampshire on Sunday morning, September 25, 2011. He was 82 years old. Gene was born in Medford, the son of the late John and Jennie McGrath. He grew up and was educated in Medford. He was a graduate of Medford High School. He served in the Army from 1947 to 1949. He then worked for New England Telephone for most of his working career. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. He had made his home in Burlington since 1962.
Gene had a competitive spirit and loved being outdoors. He was an avid tennis player. He enjoyed playing Doubles with his many friends at the Burlington County Club, where he was a member for many years. He loved the beach, dancing, and sharing special times with his family and friends. Gene’s biggest passion was that of Skiing. He skied mostly in Vermont with Mount Snow being his favorite ski resort. He taught his children to ski so that they too may enjoy his enthusiasm for the sport. Some of his family’s best memories were those times spent on the ski slopes.
Gene was the beloved husband of the late Dorothea A. (Lapsley) McGrath. He was the loving father of Joseph & his wife Cheryl of Westford, Jane McGrath & her husband Jim Walsh of Litchfield, NH, and the late Robert. He was predeceased by his brothers; John, James, Francis, and Alvin McGrath. He was also survived by 4 grandchildren, Kurt, Jenn, Jack and Cate. Longtime companion of the late Irene Welton.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, September 28 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington.
