Obituary of Eleanor T. Mitchell

Eleanor (Gannon) Mitchell, 92, a longtime resident of Burlington, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday morning, May 18.  She was the wife of the late Robert J. Mitchell.

Born and raised in East Boston, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Augustine, and the late Helen Gannon.  She came to Burlington in 1958, where she lived until coming to Brightview at Country Club Heights two years ago.

Eleanor was a faithful and active member of St. Malachy’s Church.  She was also a staunch advocate for mental health rights, and she would always make time to volunteer or attend rallies in support of mental health issues around the state.

Eleanor and her late husband were members of the Burlington Country Club, and the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Reading.  Although she wasn’t a golfer, she enjoyed being a member with her late husband.  Eleanor became active at the Burlington Senior Center, and she also made many new friends at Brightview.  Eleanor was so excited to become a grandmother and cherished the time she spent with Owen and Abigail.

Eleanor was the loving mother of Robert Mitchell and his wife Christine of Methuen, John Mitchell and his wife Eileen of Whitinsville, William Mitchell of Burlington, Ann Mitchell of Lexington, Carol Mitchell and Marie Mitchell both of Bedford, and David Mitchell and his wife Kate of Wilmington.  She was the cherished grandmother of Owen and Abigail Mitchell of Wilmington; and dear sister of the late Augustine Gannon, and the late Mary Lazor.  Eleanor is also survived by many nieces & nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt. 128/95 Woburn side) on Tuesday, May 21 from 4-8 pm.  The funeral will be from the Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 22 at 9:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10:00 am.  Burial will follow in the Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorial donations may be made to NuPath, 147 New Boston St., Woburn, MA 01801. For directions, obituary & online guestbook, see www.sullivanfuneralhome.net & www.saint-malachy.org.
