Obituary of Robert Grandy Thompson

Robert Grandy Thompson “Fuzzy” of Burlington, formerly of Reading and Winchester, passed away October 20th with his loving family by his side.  He was 79 years old.  He spent his final days at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford where he received loving care.

Bob was a graduate of Winchester High School and Bentley College.  He was also a veteran of the Army serving for 3 years as an Army Specialist 5th Class, receiving the conduct reward. He was a 50 year member of the Masons and a long time member of the Elks Club where he played on their softball team. He was a dedicated member of The Church of the Good Shepard in Reading where he served on the vestry and created the youth group.  For the last 25 years he has been an active member at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Burlington.

He was a 35 year employee of the same credit union surviving numerous acquisitions and merges from Noddle Island, to Progressive to US Alliance.  His easy manner, willingness to adapt to change and ability to learn new skills were invaluable.  He had a strong work ethic both in his professional and private life.  If he decided to do something, he did it and did it well.

In his younger years he enjoyed duck hunting and fishing.  His happy place was in Annisquam, MA where he spent his summers with his family sailing, relaxing on Rocky Beach, and playing horseshoes and cribbage.  He often ended up wearing the dreaded skunk hat but he had his winning moments too.  He was an avid Boston sports fan and was a long time Bruins season ticket holder.  He was also a regular at the Reading Rocket HS hockey games.

After retirement he spent his days working in his garden, tomatoes and strawberries were his specialty.  He also volunteered at the Bedford VA where he was known for his kindness and caring.  Anyone that knew Bob can tell you that he never had a bad word to say about anyone.  He was polite to his dying day thanking the nurses and aides every time they helped him.  He will be missed very much.

Bob was the beloved husband of Susan S. (Scott). Loving father of Matthew Thompson & his wife Bernice of Spencer, Cheryl Foley & her husband Duncan of Mt. Vernon, NH, and Lynn Fitzgerald & her husband Dean of Rowley. Proud grandfather of Aidan, Maggie, Owen, Cam, Christopher, Jenny, Lindsay, Christine and Michael.  Great grandfather to Kerry.  Uncle to many nieces and nephews.  Stepfather of Alan Page & his wife Cheryl of Medford, Jeffrey Page of Burlington, and Brian Page & his wife Laurie of Haverhill. Brother of Richard Thompson & his wife Marlene of Londonderry, NH and the late Lois Souza & her late husband Clark. A visitation will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 10 St. Marks Rd, Burlington on Saturday Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to Noon. Followed by a Funeral Service at Noon.  Refreshments will be served at the church hall following the service. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Robert’s name may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 72 E. Concord St., Boston, MA 02118 or www.apdaparkinson.org/community/massachusetts/ways-to-give-ma/donate/ or the Veterans Affairs, 200 Springs Rd, Bedford, MA 01730.
