We moved into an apartment next door to the Forand family on a very hot summer day in July 1967, having freshly arrived from England less than week before. With just the bare minimum of furniture, our household goods being en route from New York, we were prepared to sleep roughly for a few days until our things arrived. That's what pioneers in America do, isn't it. But within an hour or so, Mary arrived at our doorstep like a visiting Angel, invited us over for coffee, arranged a tea party for the younger Forand girls and our daughters Sarah and Elizabeth, and proceeded to ply us whatever linens and things we needed. This was our first introduction to American hospitality, generosity and caring, and it was no accident that it was Mary who provided it. We are Proud to have remained friends over the years. As a foreign Australian family living in Boston in the years 1968-1970 Mary befriended us and was very kind and welcoming. At our son’s first Holy Communion she provided the white garment he had to wear at St Luke’s and was like the family we had left behind in Sydney. We have such happy memories of Mary and our time in Boston. Her memorial is an outstanding tribute to an amazing lady.
