Obituary of Margery A Sorensen-Cooper

Margery A. (Merrigan) Sorensen-Cooper, a woman who dedicated her life to caring for her family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 19, 2020 at the age of 90. Margery was born in Brighton in 1929. She was one of three children born to Michael and Vora Merrigan. They were raised in Burlington during the Great Depression. Her father passed when she was only 5. Burlington was just a small farming community with dirt roads and just a few thousand residents her mother being one of two widows in Town, many townspeople assisted in any way they could. During WWII, her teenage years, rationing, and friends going off to war she assisted the town doctor, making his meals and helping out where she could. Margery graduated from Burlington High School in 1947 voted Most Popular. Those years influenced how she lived her next 7 decades. She would marry and have 7 very active children and fostered children at times. She provided a warm and loving home. Margery hosted many parties and cookouts for family and friends over the years, and feeding all the hungry children playing in the large backyard. Margery was a seamstress and hairdresser to many in town. Often, making matching outfits for the girls, mending, patching pants, making curtains and giving perms to senior citizens. She loved gardening, golfing and walking. Often seen walking around town as well as walking Horn Pond, usually with baby carriage in tow. She had a warm and outgoing personality, the gift of gab. Margery’s career started at John Hancock in Boston. Then when her children where young, she worked at home as a seamstress for the Skyer Company. While her children were in school, she worked in the cafeteria at the Union School and then Burlington High School, also keeping a watchful eye on her children. Later she went to work at Met Life in the cafeteria and went on to retire. Her retirement years she met the love of her life Bob Cooper and went on to reside at Suni Sands in Jupiter, Florida. She could finally take time to take care of herself. They golfed, walked, played cards, went to Bingo, and enjoyed the sun. The good life in Florida was wonderful, so when her children needed help caring for her grandchildren, Margery gave up her Florida home and moved back to Burlington. She helped raise many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Margery knew that family always needed to come first in her life caring for her kids, 11 grandkids and 9 great grandkids well into her late 80’s. Margery was the beloved wife of the late Robert J. Cooper. She was the former wife of the late C. Warren Sorensen. She was the loving mother of Paul Sorensen of Franconia, NH, Donna McGowan of Wilmington, Judy Sorensen & Louis Valente of Burlington, Jeffrey Sorensen of Saugus, Arthur Sorensen & his wife Cyndi Marzeoti-Sorensen, Robin Sorensen & Paul McCauley of Burlington, and the late Calvin Sorensen.
