Obituary of Richard Spreadbury

Richard S. Spreadbury, a retired Burlington Fire Fighter passed away after a long illness at the VA Medical Center in West Roxbury on Friday afternoon, January 4, 2013. He was 74 years old. Richard was born in Boston, the son of the late Roland and Mary Spreadbury. He grew up in on Nuttings Lake in Billerica. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Marines and served 7 months during the Korean War. He then transferred to the Army, where he served as a Paratrooper. He served for another 3 years. After the war he owned his own construction company before becoming a fire fighter. He worked on the Burlington Fire Department for 20 years prior to his retirement. He also continued working in construction part time.. Richard was an outdoorsman. He spent much of his retirement years on his property in Charleston, Maine. The more rustic and rural the lifestyle, the better it was for Richard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on his property. He was extremely skilled and could fix almost anything. His family and friends jokingly referred to him as “The Mission Man”. Just give his a task and he was driven to get it done. He proudly drove his motorcycle until this past summer. He was proud to serve his country, community, and enjoy America’s Great outdoors.. Richard was the loving father of Richard S. Spreadbury, Jr. & his wife Colleen of Burlington, Carolyn Koenig & her husband Ron of Weldon Spring, MO, and Kathie Clark of Billerica. He was the brother of the late Robert Spreadbury. He was the proud grandfather of Madison Spreadbury of Burlington and Kyle & Colby Koenig of MO. He was the former husband of Linda Spreadbury of Lake St. Louis, MO. A visiting hour will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 of Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Monday, Jan. 7 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Richard’s name may be made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
