Geraldine “Gerry” Ann (Ciampo) McGowan, a woman who adored her family, passed away at her home surrounded by those she loved and cared for on Saturday morning, January 23, 2021.  She was 79 years old.  She was a retired employee of the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center where she worked for over 25 years as a purchasing agent and administrative assistant.

Gerry was born in Woburn.  She was one of seven children born to Anthony and Anna (Angrisano) Ciampo.  She had many wonderful memories growing up in Woburn, spent with her siblings, and in her kitchen cooking with her mother.  She was a 1959 graduate of Woburn High School.  She married her high school sweetheart, Donald McGowan, in 1962.  They lived in Woburn for several years before settling in Burlington in 1967 to raise their 5 children.  At home, Gerry was in charge of keeping order in a very active family.  She could manage all the kids’ activities, sports, and school events, keep her home perfectly clean, and have a home cooked meal served every night promptly at 5 pm.  Each of her children remember that she never missed one of their sporting events, even though they often played at the same time but at different places.  She was always a vocal supporter of all her children and later grandchildren in their baseball, hockey, football, soccer, softball, tennis and basketball games.  She was always there to encourage, console, and celebrate with them in all their sporting and life achievements.  She did the same for her grandchildren and wouldn’t think twice to drive to Connecticut to see her grandchildren’s sporting events.  The annual McGowan Summer Vacation spent on Lake Winnipesaukee with all her children and spouses and her 12 grandchildren was her most favorite week of the year for the past 30 plus years.  She was anxiously awaiting the birth of her first great grandchild.  For Gerry, her family was her greatest achievement.  She loved each one of them unconditionally and could not be prouder of their accomplishments at work, as parents, athletes, citizens, and keeping the McGowan family bond strong.

Gerry was the loving wife and best friend to her husband, Donald M. McGowan, for 59 years.  They enjoyed raising a family, every precious moment spent with and doting on their grandchildren.  She was the loving mother of Glen McGowan & his wife Nicole of Billerica, Donnie McGowan & his wife Kelly of Bedford, Kevin McGowan & his wife Lynn of Nashua, NH, Michele Burnham & her husband Lenny of Woburn, and Sean McGowan & his wife Katie of Burlington.  She was the proud grandmother of Kylie, Gianna, Courtney, Shane, Ryan, Kevin Jr., Michaela, Drew, Owen, & Sophie McGowan and Joey Burnham & his wife Hailey, and Nicholas Burnham. She was the devoted sister of Jan Garden of Burlington, Anna McSweeney of Malden, June McCarthy of Alpine WY, Anthony Ciampo of Naples, FL, William Ciampo of Naples, FL, and the late Jo Graney. She is also survived by one sister-in-law Donna Ciampo and two brother-in-laws, John McSweeney and Chuck McCarthy.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret Church in St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.com, 111 Winn St., Burlington on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with a burial in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
