Obituary of Robert Maher

Robert H. Maher, Burlington, MA, a retired Engineer and Real Estate investor passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Thursday morning, January 24, 2013. He was 74 years old. Bob was born and raised in North Adams, MA. He was the son of the late William and Cecelia Maher. He was a graduate of Drury High School in North Adams. Following high school, Bob served 3 years in the Army. During his service he was recognized as the 1958 Soldier of the Year as a member of the Headquarters Battery, 21st Artillery Regiment, of the 25th Infantry Division, stationed in Hawaii. He was discharged in 1959 and went to North Adams State where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, magna cum laude. After graduation, he took an assistantship at Boston College while taking chemistry courses. He then worked as a chemist at Itek Corp in Lexington, where he received a patent for his work on a photographic developing process. Bob had a very successful career as an engineer. He was known for his keen mind and analytical approach to problem solving. He worked at Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams as an engineer while he earned his Master of Science Degree in Chemistry from Williams College. Continuing his engineering career, he worked as a product engineering manager at Tansitor Electronics in Bennington, Vermont. In 1987 Bob began his entrepreneurial career. He owned several small businesses in the Boston area before starting R.H.M. Property Management, where he invested and maintained rental properties. He used his same methodical and systematic approach in real estate as he did as an engineer. Outside of work, he was a big fan of Westerns, Comedies, and keeping up on the World Wide Web. He will be remembered for his generosity, comedic wit, and harmonious singing voice. His contagious laughter will never be forgotten. Bob was the beloved husband of Anne C. (Flammia) and a loving father of three. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Robert & his wife Kirsten of Ashland, his son Steven of Bonita Springs, FL, his daughter Cheryl of Tyngsboro, and his daughter in law Audrey Darling of Cape Cod. He was the brother of Theodore “Ted” of Windsor, CT, and Joseph of Port St. Lucie, FL and the late William of N. Fort Myers. He was the proud grandfather of Justin, Katherine, Ariss, & Ariana Maher and Cecelia Soto. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington, (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Monday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at noon. Visiting hours will be held at the Sullivan Funeral Home on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. Burial in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
