Obituary of James A. Pattie
James A. “Jim” Pattie, a Teacher and State Champion Coach, passed away after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer on Friday morning, February 1, 2013. He was 64 years old.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Burlington. He was a graduate of Burlington High School, Class of 1966. At that time, Burlington High was a small, but growing school and the options for sports were very limited. As a Senior, he played on Burlington’s First Varsity Hockey Team. He had a great passion for tennis, but that was not offered at the time. Jim would go onto University of Massachusetts to earn his Teacher’s Degree and later earned his Masters and had worked on his Doctorate.
Jim was a teacher and educator first. He taught 8th grade English and reading in Concord most of his career. He committed himself to his students and athletes. He not only taught the importance of literature, grammar, reading, but self esteem, values, respect, commitment, and fair play. He was a mentor and role model to his students and athletes. He coached Girls Tennis and Soccer at Concord Carlisle High School. His teams had great success and had won 5 State Championships over his years of Coaching. He was inducted into the Concord Carlisle Athletic Hall of Fame. He himself was a great tennis player and always enjoyed a competitive match with family and friends. He was a member of the Burlington Swim and Tennis Club and the Woburn Racquet Club.
Jim had a great devotion to his family. He was a proud and supportive father to his daughter Alyssa. He was thrilled to see her become a teacher as well. He loved being the grandfather of Jamie and Sean and it gave him great joy to have been able to be with them in Disneyworld on their last family vacation. He had a great respect for his parents and a wonderful bond with his siblings and many nieces and nephews. Jim has enriched and brightened the lives of all his family, friends, students, and athletes and his memory and life lessons will continue to live on through them.
