Obituary of Joanne Mitza

Joanne (White) Mitza, passed away at the Winchester Hospital on Sunday morning, December 26^th following a 2-year battle with ALS.  The beloved wife of Joseph J. Mitza, Jr. she was 71 years old.

Joanne was born and raised in Somerville. She was the daughter of the late William and Patricia White.  Joanne was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Somerville.  She would meet her future husband, Joe, through mutual friends.  They married on October 3, 1970, and lived in Somerville and Medford before moving to Burlington in 2004. 

Joanne worked for the nonprofit Triangle in Malden for over 10 years.  Triangle specialized in empowering people and their families with disabilities to enjoy rich and fulfilled lives.  She then went to work for National Grid for over 15 years retiring last January. 

Joanne had a kind, caring and nurturing personality. She was a hands-on mom and was always there for her sons Joseph and Chris.  Joanne was the primary care giver for her sister Patty who had special needs.  It was because of the loving care that Joanne provided for her sister that made Patty’s life so much richer.   Joanne’s greatest joy was her granddaughter, Greta.  She loved to spoil Greta and spending time with her brought so much happiness to her life.

Joanne and Joe had a wonderful life together.  They enjoyed their annual trips to Aruba and vacations in York Beach, Maine.  Joanne enjoyed playing bingo, going shopping, cooking and just being with her family and friends.  Joanne will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who always put the needs of others above her own.

Joanne was the beloved wife of Joseph J. Mitza, Jr.  She was the loving mother of Joseph Mitza, III & his wife Elizabeth of Burlington and the late Christopher Mitza.  Cherished “Nanny” to Greta Mitza of Burlington.  Sister of William White & his wife Elaine of Nahant, Patricia White of Burlington, the late Maryanne White Barresi and Jean Marie Tabor of North Port, FL.  Special niece to Delores Landry and her family of Burlington.   Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington on Thursday, Dec. 30 from 4-7 p.m.  Funeral from the Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 31 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Malachy Church in St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.org, 99 Bedford St. Burlington at 10 a.m.  Burial will be private.  The family requests that people attending the wake please wear masks and the church requires masks be worn at the funeral mass.  In lieu of flowers memorials in Joanne’s name may be made to Compassionate Care ALS, PO Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02574 www.ccals.org
