Obituary of Mary Jane Mullins
Mary Jane Mullins, a retired Bookkeeper, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at the age of 97. Mary was one of nine children born to Timothy and Jullia Mullins. The family grew up in Somerville in a home filled to the brim with children, commotion, laughter, and love. It was a wonderful home and environment to grow up in. She had a strong bond with all her siblings and remained close with them all their lives. They always had each other’s backs. Mary’s long-time boyfriend of 50 years, Peter Murphy, filled her nights and weekends with fun, companionship, and love. Mary was the primary caregiver to her mother until her passing. Mary was known to her 33 nieces and nephews as the “Sassy”, “Spunky”, and “Feisty” aunt and they would get so excited to see Aunt Mary show up in her red 1967 Mustang Convertible at family gatherings. She loved them all as her own children, and especially enjoyed welcoming the newborns to the family. There were several family trips to Ireland to see their relatives and where her parents were raised. She worked as a bookkeeper at Gillis Engineering and FM Byrnes Seafood Co. As a young lady, she loved spending summer days at Hampton Beach soaking up the sun. She enjoyed going to Bingo with friends and family and was a member of several bowling leagues. She and Pete loved to go to all sorts of sporting events, especially the Red Sox, and even once to a boxing match. She lived a long life surrounded by her family filled with love and wonderful memories.
Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Timothy J. & Julia F. (Cronin) Mullins. Loving sister of the late Julia Gillis, Anne Brynes, Teresa Driscoll, Joan Foohey and Patrick, John, Thomas & Timothy Mullins. Longtime companion of the late Peter Murphy. Sister-in-law of Phyllis Mullins of Reading. Mary is also survived by 33 nieces and nephews and tons of great nieces and great nephews. The family is greatly appreciative of the nursing staff at Windsor Place and Advinia Care in Wilmington for the great care shown to Mary over the last years of her life. Mary was a fiercely independent and feisty woman. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
