Dimitra J. Sparages, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022. She was 84 years old. Dimitra was born in Myrtopotamia, Greece. At the age of 24 she immigrated to the United States. She met her future husband Jimmy at a church picnic. The couple married in 1962 and settled in Somerville. She first worked as a seamstress and later joined her husband at their restaurant, Puritan Lunch, on Huntington Ave in Boston. After 19 years, they started J & D Coffee Shop on Chaple Street in Newton, which they ran for 11 years.
Outside of work, it was all about their family and church. Lifelong and active church members, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church was where they deepened their faith, spoke in their native language, and socialized. If she wasn’t tending to her vegetable or flower garden, you would find her in the kitchen making amazing Greek dishes for her family. She was especially known for her delicious Greek pastries including diples and trigona.
From annual family summer vacations to Old Orchard Beach, to the several cruises and the occasional trips home to Greece, Dimitra loved to spend time enjoying her time traveling.
She was blessed to have her grandchildren live just doors away and be a very vital part of her life. She was the heart of her family. Dimitra had a wonderful life, always surrounded by family and friends. She had wonderful opportunities and experiences and lived her life with her style and approach. She will be lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.
Dimitra was the beloved wife of 60 years of James A. “Jimmy” Sparages. She was the loving mother of Anargyros “Narge” Sparages & his wife Margaret of Winchester and Elaine Sparages Manners of Burlington. She was the sister of Katina Kalivas of Greece and the late Eleni Anastasopoulos, Ioannis Aggouras, and Anthony Aggouras. She was the proud grandmother, “yiayia” of Christina Manners and Michael Manners. She was also survived by many nieces and nephews both in the United States and in Greece.
Because of renovations of her home church in Somerville, visiting hour will be held at the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, www.annunciationwoburn.org, 70 Montvale Ave, Woburn on Saturday, July 2 from 10-11am. Funeral services will begin at 11am. and will conclude with a burial in Pine Haven Cemetery in Burlington.
