Obituary of Nicholas Kakis
Nicholas Kakis, a retired driver for JJ Nissen Bread Company and member of the Teamsters, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday night, January 28, 2023. He was 90 years old. Nick was born in Watertown. He was one of four children born to Greek immigrants, Emmanuel and Catherine Kakis. He grew up and was educated in Watertown. He was a graduate of Watertown High School. He enlisted in the Army and served for 1 year during the Korean War. He then spent almost 4 years in the Air National Guard.
Nick worked for most of his career as a driver for JJ Nissen Bread Company. He would make deliveries to grocery stores and restaurants and set up displays when needed. He had his regular route and enjoyed the interaction with all his customers he serviced. He was a member of the Teamsters all of his career.
Nick had almost 31 years of retirement. He would spend his days working around his home, tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. He would spend hours with his friends, Bob Richard, Bob Glover, and Charlie O’Neill working on projects, drinking coffee, and talking. He was extremely independent right up until the end. He spent much of his time caring for his disabled daughter, Christina. In his later years, he was blessed to have his daughter, Susan, and granddaughter, Marissa, living with him. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He would pick Marissa up from school each day and entertain her until her mother came home from work. He would show his tough guy image but would dote on Marissa and say it was their secret and don’t tell her mother. He will be lovingly remembered by all.
Nick was the beloved husband of Florence (Lawson) Kakis. He was the caring father of Christina Kakis of Concord and Susan Walker of Burlington. He was the proud grandfather of Marissa Walker of Burlington. He was the brother of John Kakis & his wife Mary of Woburn, the late Marion Young & her late husband John Young, and the late Emmanuel ”Manny” Kakis and his surviving wife Diane Kakis of Chelmsford.
