Obituary of Mary Kakis

Mary Theresa Kakis, loving wife of John Kakis and a retired Legal Secretary, passed away on February 21, 2023, at the age of 91. Mary was born in Somerville, MA to her parents James and Mary Crowley, who had emigrated from Ireland. She grew up there in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School. After graduating she made an excellent career for herself working as a Legal Secretary for some prominent lawyers in Boston.

Mary met John Kakis later in life and the two hit it off. They dated for five years before John proposed to Mary. Those five years of dating were enough though, because the two were married just two weeks later. In the 1980s, Mary and John bought a house down on the Cape in Falmouth. They spent time sprucing it up and making it their own. One of their favorite activities was just walking along the beach and just being able to spend time together.

Mary was a giver with an incredible heart. She loved to knit sweaters, and sew dresses for others. She made hats, gloves and mittens for so many and donated some to charity. Mary had an artistic itch that always needed scratching. She would paint with oils and build leaded glass windows. Mary was kind to everyone she encountered and enjoyed talking with others and sharing friendly company. She always enjoyed spending time at the Woburn Senior Center catching up with friends.

Mary was the loving wife of John Kakis of Woburn.  Mary was the beloved sister of John Crowley and his wife Justine of Wellesley, Rita Carney and her late husband Don of Chelmsford. She’s preceded in death by her siblings Elizabeth Looney, James Crowley, Theresa Peters and Irene Crowley and loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA, 01803, on Monday, February 27, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 followed immediately by a funeral service at the funeral home starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery, 145 Boston Street, Lynn, MA 01904 following the service. Memorials in Mary’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/
