Obituary of Mary L McCarthy

Mary L. McCarthy, a resident of Burlington for 62 years, formerly of Waltham, passed away on Tuesday night, March 14, 2023.  She was 94 years old.    She was the daughter of John P. and Margaret McCarthy.  She had a delightful childhood filled with wonderful memories of Waltham and her beloved St. Mary’s High Schools years.  She met her future husband Daniel “Joe” McCarthy at the Chateau Restaurant, and they were married in 1951.  They made their home in Waltham and Cambridge before purchasing their forever home in Burlington in 1961.

After High School, Mary worked as an operator for New England Telephone.  When she became a mother, she remained home with her family.  When her children were well settled in school, she went back to work at first part time at “The Hot Shop” which a food establishment at the Burlington Mall and then MacDonalds.  When the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center opened in Burlington she was part of the original staff.  She worked in the food services department delivering meals to patients.  Her kind personality and quick and sweet wit made her much loved by the patients who needed someone to brighten their day.  There was one patient that appreciated her warmth so much, that he made a 1-million-dollar donation to the hospital in her honor.

Mary was a woman who found joy in the simple things.  She loved her home, listening to sports radio, shopping with her best friend Mary Magliozzi at her favorite store, Building 19 ½, and being a part of her children and grandchildren’s lives.  She kept up on local and world events right up until her passing.  She never wanted to be the center of attention and much preferred a simple conversation.  She was proud of her Irish heritage and for her and her family, St. Patrick’s Day, was as big as Thanksgiving or New Years.  She was genuine and sincere, and her sense of humor was so cute and entertaining.  She will be lovingly remembered by all those she touched during her lifetime.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late Daniel “Joe” McCarthy, Jr.  She was the loving mother of Michael McCarthy & his wife Adrienne of Billerica, Paul McCarthy & his wife Carol of Tewksbury, David McCarthy & his wife Charlene of Billerica, Donald McCarthy of Woburn, James “Butch” McCarthy of Burlington & his longtime companion Linda Brady, and Marylou Douzepis & her husband Harry of Saco, ME.   Sister of the late Arlene Nadolny, Helen Nadolny, and Jack McCarthy.  She was the proud grandmother of David McCarthy, Steven McCarthy, Amy McCarthy-Gawel, Michelle, Jason Powers, Nathan Powers, and Leah Hartung and great grandmother of Cody, Grady, Kerry, Jackson, and Millie. Mary also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. Thank family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at AdviniaCare Wilmington.

Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington on Sunday, March 19 from noon to 3 p.m. Funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home on Monday, March 20 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Church in St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.org, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with a burial in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.   Memorials in Mary’s name may be made to People Helping People, www.peoplehelpingpeopleinc.org, P.O.
