Obituary of Kevin W. Higgins

Kevin W. Higgins, a Vietnam Army Veteran and longtime employee of Hostess passed away after a short battle with cancer at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln on Thursday, on July 6, 2023.  He was 76 years old.  Kevin was born in Cambridge and grew up in Somerville.  He was the son of the late James and Marguerite Higgins.  He attended Don Bosco High School until his family moved to Burlington where he graduated from Burlington High School.  Only months after graduating, he enlisted in the Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant.  He served 3 years in the Army with one of which was in Vietnam.  He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

After his military service, Kevin joined the Teamsters IBEW Local 494.  He spent 30 years working for Hostess as a route salesman.  He was located at the Malden Hostess facility and serviced stores in Lynn, Cambridge, and Somerville.  He enjoyed his work and the friendships formed with his coworkers and his customers.  But the biggest benefit of working for Hostess was meeting a fellow coworker, Carla Grimaldi, who later became his wife of 25 years.

Kevin was a humble man with time spent with family and friends being his biggest priority.  As a family, they semiannually took trips to Ireland to visit with family in Cork.  There were also numerous cruises, a trip to Europe, excursions to Atlantic City, and summer vacations spent in Ogunquit.  Kevin could be just as happy at home tending to his well-manicured lawn.  Probably the only flashy thing about Kevin were his cars.  In high school he claimed his Chevy was the fastest car in Burlington.  Ever since he had multiple Camaros which he meticulously maintained.  Kevin’s passing leaves his family with heavy hearts and being comforted by the countless wonderful memories shared with Kevin.

Kevin was the beloved husband of Carla M. (Grimaldi)Higgins.  He was predeceased by his brothers James Higgins, Robert Higgins, and Rev. Michael Higgins, O’CARM. He was the son-in-law of Theresa Grimaldi of Chelsea and brother-in-law of Yasko Higgins of Old Saybrook, CT and Paula Grimaldi of Chelsea.  He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, cousins and friends.

There will be a visiting hour held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 11 from 10 to 11am and will conclude with a funeral service at the funeral home at 11am.  He will be buried at Pine Haven Cemetery in Burlington with military honors.

Memorials in Kevin’s name may be made to Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, www.caredimensions.org
