Obituary of George P. Cushman

George Patrick Cushman, a retired manager at GE passed away on Wednesday morning, July 19, 2023.  He was 78 years old.  He was born and raised in Portland, Maine.  He was one of six children born to Harriette and Joseph Henry Cushman, Jr.  After graduating from Portland High School, he entered the apprentice program with General Electric and remained with GE his entire career.  He worked days and went to Northeastern at night to earn his business degree.  He was a manager at the GE Aerospace Division I Lynn designing jet engines. He enjoyed his career and playing lunch-time basketball where he showed off his McHale-like moves.

George married his high school sweetheart Joyce Turner on July 17th, 1965.  They started in Lynn, then Billerica for six years before settling in Burlington in 1974.  George was very active in both his sons’ athletic pursuits, attending all the baseball, soccer and basketball games without fail.

George enjoyed traveling to Little Sebago Lake in the summer to spend time with the extended family swimming, boating and just relaxing.  He had fun snorkeling and scuba diving during stays in the Caribbean.  There were also trips to England, Scotland, the Grand Canyon, Cruises, Yellowstone National Park, and Las Vegas.  He loved his red Ford truck.  Big Red was pristine and only driven by him.  During a trip to the Great Lakes, he made sure to stop by and take a tour of the Ford 150 plant.

George was never one to sit idle. He walked around Mill Pond every morning with his wife Joyce.  They would also go to Walden Pond, Battle Road in Concord, or walk to Lahey Clinic if they had an appointment.  He was constantly doing projects around his home and even built his garage with the help of many in the neighborhood.  He was a big fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots & Bruins.  He volunteered his time assisting seniors at the Council on Aging with their taxes.  He was always up for an adventure, embraced life, and brightened the lives of everyone around him.

George was the loving  husband of 58 years of Joyce (Turner) Cushman. He was the proud and loving father of George Cushman, Jr. of Acton, and Bradford Joseph Cushman of Burlington.  He was the brother of the late Carol Ann Peters Roland, Joseph Cushman III & his wife Charlotte of Hermon, ME, the late Thomas Cushman & his surviving wife Joan Cushman of Portland, ME, Gail Clements & her husband Harry of Rocky Point, NC, Terrance Cushman of Windham, ME & his late wife Gayle.  He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews and friends.
