Obituary of Ken Powers
Kenneth “Ken” Powers was born on December 15, 1944 to Thomas and Alicia Power. He grew up in Medford, MA, attending Malden Catholic School and graduating from Melvin V. Weldon Vocational High School, where he specialized in electrical work. Ken rounded out his education by occasionally skipping out of school to go play pool at Stagliani’s (Stags as it was more commonly known). Ken became an electrical contractor owning his own business performing residential, commercial and industrial electrical work in the Greater Boston Area and for the town of Burlington.
Ken met the love of his life - Julie Hebert - playing volleyball, and they have been together for more than 40 years. They were married on September 24, 1983, and they settled in Burlington, MA. Ken and Julie split their time between Burlington and Brewster, MA for many years, eventually retiring to Brewster. Their years together were filled with beach visits, kayaking, hiking, traveling, and always laughing and loving with friends and family. Ken and Julie loved traveling around New England, visiting family all over the US and in Newfoundland. They also loved their annual trips to Mexico, where they made many friends.
Ken will be remembered for his kindness, hilarious sense of humor, and his smile, which always lit up the room. He had a tremendous work ethic, and modeled that for his children and grandchildren. He also understood that actions speak louder than words - and would often perform services and acts of kindness without being asked or expecting acknowledgement. He would see a need, and he would take care of it. One of Ken’s super powers was to make everyone feel at home, comfortable, and seen.
Ken always enjoyed classics: cars, music, and movies. He and Julie enjoyed cruising in their 1960 Corvette. He had oldies playing in the garage, and wired speakers so he could enjoy the sounds of his 8-tracks on the patio and in the pool.
Ken passed away from complications brought on by falls due to dementia on July 27, 2023. He leaves behind his daughter Kerri Powers and her sons Jack and Harrison of Burlington, MA, and his son Mark Powers and his partner, Danielle Clermont of Medford. He also leaves sisters Marilyn Yavnian and her husband Jacques of Burlington, and Aileen Derocher of Dorchester. Ken was predeceased by his parents and his brother Gerard (Buddy) Power. And most regretfully, Ken left his love, Julie, but not before she gave him permission and promised him that she would find him when it’s time.
Ken’s life will be celebrated during a visitation at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA 01803, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, from 4 to 7pm. Per family request, please wear casual and colorful dress; as Ken will be too.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.alz.org/ or https://www.stjude.org/ respectfully in Ken’s memory.
