Obituary of Imelda Marie Harrington

Imelda Marie Harrington, a woman of family and faith, went to be with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, August 7, 2023.  She was 84 years old. Imelda was born in Antipolo in the Philippines.  Her father, Richard Fitzsimmons, was originally from Ireland and her mother, Miguela (Rusca) Fitzsimmons was a Philippine native.  The family immigrated to the United States when Imelda was a youth.  She was a graduate of Sacred Heart School in Newton and then studied to be a nurse’s aide.  She married John Harrington, and they settled in Burlington in 1962.  Imelda had seven children.  She loved her role as caregiver and homemaker to her large family.  She instilled upon all her children the importance of strong Catholic values and importance of prayer in one’s life.  She was a longtime parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church in Burlington.  She wore her trademark, light blue beret, accompanied by her children.  Her faith ran deep, and she believed in the power of prayer, especially the Holy Rosary.   She would travel to St. Michael’s World Apostolate in New York five or six times a year.   She accepted her fate and lived a life based on family, charity, and her faith.

Imelda was the beloved wife of the late John Peter Harrington.  She was the loving mother of Richard Harrington of Lowell, Francis Harrington of Tyngsboro, John Harrington of Tyngsboro, James Harrington of Billerica, Dennis Harrington of Lowell, Mark Harrington of Virginia and the late Susan Harrington.  She was the loving grandmother of Philip Harrington, Sean Harrington, James Harrington, II., and Maria Harrington.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington on Wednesday, August 9 from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, 270 Elliot Street, Newton on Thursday, August 10 at 10:30 a.m. Services will conclude with a burial in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington
