Elaine Marie Smith, 78, of Rome, GA and a former longtime resident of Burlington, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday September 8,2023.

She was born in Chelsea, MA on July 18, 1945 the daughter of the late John Henry Smith Jr. and Winifred Marie (Cormier) Smith. Elaine was raised in Chelsea and moved with her family to Burlington where she graduated from Burlington High School. For many years she was employed by the Food and Drug Administration as an administrative assistant and inspector.

Elaine raised her family in Burlington in the house her father/uncle built and was not only able to make a warm and loving home for her immediate family, but also was able to make a comfortable foster home for over 100 foster children over a 23-year span, the majority being babies and toddlers. She absolutely loved the fostering process; she would be a foster parent to some children for weeks and some for years. Elaine was still in communication with some of her foster children who  adoringly still referred to her as ‘Mama Lane’.

Elaine moved to Rome, GA 11 years ago to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. She loved shopping and lived by the motto “Shop till you drop’.  She enjoyed listening to country music, line dancing and loved to travel. Some of her most favorite places included Ireland, Israel, Nova Scotia, to visit family, Disney World, and any ‘tank full of gas’ destination. Elaine will always be remembered as being able to light up a room, be it with her amazing sense of humor or her ability to make anyone a friend, but most of all for her love of her family and friends.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Christine Carroll of Rome, GA., and Jessica Garfield of Summerville, GA., siblings, John H. Smith III of Northwood, NH., Sister-in-Law, Mary Theresa Smith of Burlington, Celeste Garrity of Woburn, and Cheryl Robicheau of Amesbury, , six grandchildren, Breana Lotero, Shane Shuman, Tyler Garfield, Jesse Cushing Jr., Kyle Cushing, three great grandchildren, Madison Lotero, Jason Lotero, and Amiyah Simmons, three generations of wonderful nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

She was predeceased by her son, Sean Carroll and her brother, Francis W. Smith.

Elaine's visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 8th, from 3-6pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington. Her Funeral Mass will be Monday, October 9th at St. Margaret’s Church at 10am, her burial will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington.
