Dear Connie and family,
Please accept my deepest condolences. I had the honor of working with Joe for over five years at Shire/Takeda, with a significant portion of that time under his leadership in the rare disease TAU. Joe exhibited exceptional leadership and dedication, particularly during the challenging time of COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to his responsibilities overseeing rare disease biostatistics, Joe also took on the management of biostatistics for all COVID-related projects for a period, dedicating countless extra hours to the relentless fight against the virus. His unwavering passion and professionalism inspired us all to strive for excellence in developing potential treatments for COVID-19. To me, Joe embodies the best of a statistician whose example we should all follow. May Joe’s soul rest in peace.
Sincerely,
James Hao

Dear Connie,
I'm so sorry to hear your loss. Wishing you take care of yourself during this difficult time.
I still remembered that you and Joe so kindly helped me during my first job search.
Joe and I both obtained Ph.D in Mathematics & Master degree in Biostatistics from UWO, and worked for Takeda for many years, but It's pity that we didn't know we were in the same city for the same employer.
Dr. Gao had achieved great success in his academic and career area. He is a proud of all of our Asian Americans. He will be remembered by all of us. May his soul rest in peace.

Dear Connie and family,
I’m so sorry for your loss. Joe was a respected and appreciated member of the Takeda community whose care for his team, his colleagues, and dedication to doing the right thing for the right reasons shone through. I enjoyed our conversations and working through the complexities of our work. One of my fondest memories was being surprised in discovering Joe’s sense of humor, which came while preparing for an interaction with regulatory authorities. I don’t remember what was said, but I remember having to study his expression to find a subtle tug of mischief behind a poker face. It was a wonderful side of Joe I was thankful to see then and after. I’m grateful for having met him and for having trod a few steps with him on doing meaningful things. Joe will be greatly missed.

Joe and I first met during my interview with Takeda in 2021. He was knowledgeable and extremely kind. Even though I eventually chose a different group, Joe supported me with clarity and transparency throughout the process. For this, I am deeply grateful.
Although I have not worked with Joe directly, everything I heard about him was outstanding. He is a sound statistician and a great mentor. He cares for and nurtures his team and was inspiring to people working with him. His passing definitely left a big hole here that's hard to fill. We will miss him deeply.
