Obituary of Thomas J. Manning

With profound sadness, we bid farewell to a truly extraordinary soul, Thomas Joseph Manning, who passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024 at the age of 80 after a long-fought battle, one month shy of his 81st birthday. His journey through life was marked by unwavering strength, boundless determination, strength of mind, and a legendary sense of humor that brightened the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1943 to Thomas J. Manning Sr. and Kathleen Barbara (Kelly), Tom lived a life defined by resilience and determination. He entered the U.S. Army as a teenager and proudly served his country with honor and distinction, a testament to his unwavering commitment to duty and sacrifice. His bravery knew no bounds, and his fellow servicemen held him in the highest regard. Over the course of his life, whether starting his own business or working to help politicians seeking higher office, he gave every endeavor his all, facing life's challenges head-on and never backing down in the face of adversity.

Tom was a man of immeasurable strength, both in body and spirit. His toughness was matched only by his boundless compassion, generosity, and desire to help others find their footing and have a successful life. In 1991, Tom made the decision to live a life of sobriety, and he was very proud of that commitment – he found his purpose – to be a guiding light for those still battling their demons. Tom was a pillar of strength and a mentor, and a friend to many. His warmth, empathy, and unwavering support helped countless individuals find the courage to confront their addiction and take the first steps toward sobriety. He was a living testament to the transformative power of the human spirit and a source of inspiration to all who crossed his path.

But perhaps what endeared Tom to so many was his infectious sense of humor, which could brighten even the darkest of days. His quick wit and clever comebacks brought laughter and joy to all who were fortunate enough to be in his presence. His jokes and stories will be fondly remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of sharing a laugh with him.

Tom leaves behind a legacy that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was the devoted husband of Elaine (Tura), his wife of 61 years with whom he shared a bond that withstood the tests of time. He is also survived by his children, Kathleen Manning Hall (John), Malden, MA; Patricia MacIntyre (Scott), Merrimack, NH; Debra Lang (Sean), Nashua, NH; and Kelly Morrison (Scott), Rowley, MA. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend, “brother” and “wingman,” Jim Leary, and dear friend, Frank Brachanow, along with a host of cherished cousins and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington on Tuesday, April 23rd from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  His Funeral Service will follow at 12 p.m. at St. Margaret Church in St. Veronica Parish, 111 Winn Street, Burlington.  At the request of the family, burial will be held privately.
