Kai Yeh: I wish you could stick around to run for vice president. Neither one (or both candidates added together) can match your heroic military records. Think about the days as a Forward Scout, you were at least a couple miles behind enemy line, directing artillery shells to land on North Korean positions right around yourself! Remember the moment that you had to blast your way out with your carbine when your forward base was overrun by enemy? I always told people that your good look, gentlemanly manners and soft talks were very deceiving. You were a damn good fighter! (Sometimes a bully too. For years I played mahjong with you hoping to get some contribution from you to pay for my children's college. I ended up working two jobs just to pay you!) - Paul Chan

My first thought of my Uncle Walter is that he was the youngest of his family’s five kids—May, Paul, June, Eveline, and Walter. Because of that, a few of us cousins would always call him Kau Foo Jai or “Little Uncle,” in Cantonese, and that was the name that stuck even when he was in his 90’s… We always felt our Uncle’s presence in our family, even from a distance, as everyone moved out on their own. As they grew older, though, he and his older sisters and their spouses also grew closer and would travel together both near (the Burlington Mall) and far (the infamous Mediterranean cruise). These were experiences I know were valued by both my parents, as were the weekly phone calls that continued until they were gone. My own fondest memory of my Uncle Walter was after my own Mom’s, Eveline’s, passing, when he phoned us every night for over a week “just to check in.” I appreciated that more than I can ever say, and will always be grateful to him for his kind words and concern. In other words, our Uncle Walter was a really good guy. Thanks so much to our Aunt Nancy, and cousins Rita and Hilda, for sharing him with us—we’ll miss him, too.

Mr. Wong, my family's long-time neighbor, was one of the kindest men we have had the blessing to know. Always ready with a wave and a smile, despite our moving eighteen years ago, he has remained in our memories and hearts. We are so very sorry to learn of his passing, and are sending strength and joyful memories to his family and friends.
