Obituary of John J. Joyce
John J Joyce Jr, 87, a retired educator, passed away on Monday November 4th after a lengthy illness.
John was born in South Boston, the son of the late John and Alice (O’Brien) Joyce. He attended Boston Latin High School prior to his acceptance to West Point. After suffering an injury while playing football at West Point John took a job in the banking industry where he met his future wife, Marion Cormack. John and Marion were wed in 1961 and eventually made Burlington their home, where they raised a family. John went on to further his education by enrolling in a dual master’s program at Boston College graduating with a master’s degree in mathematics and education. Shortly after graduation from Boston College, John began working for Winchester Public School as a High School Math teacher. John would spend the next 35 years at Winchester High School where he would ultimately become the Head of the Math Department. Students loved his quick wit and dry sense of humor. During his tenure at Winchester High the students dedicated two yearbooks to him. A testament to his commitment to the students and teaching. Teaching was John’s passion, after retiring from Winchester High School. John became a professor at both Northeastern University and Middlesex Community college where he spent 25 years.
His wife and children always came first. John volunteered coaching baseball and softball for many years. He also was a member of the Ways and Means committee for the town of Burlington.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marion F. (Cormack) Joyce, his son, John B. Joyce of Burlington, MA his two daughters Erin Joyce of Milford, NH and Kerry Joyce of Tewksbury, MA as well as many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his sister Patricia Miller.
Relatives are respectfully invited to attend his visiting hours on Friday, November 8th from 4pm to 7pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington Ma. His funeral will be Saturday morning starting at 9am from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret’s in St. Veronica’s Parish at 10am.
