Obituary of Maryann J. Mecrones

Maryann J. Mecrones, age 94, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024 at Aberjona Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in East Boston, MA on October 1, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Spero and Mary (Penta) Mecrones. Maryann grew up in East Boston and attended Fitton Central School for her elementary and high school years. As a young girl, she was introduced to “The arts “in her home as well as school. It was during these formative years, she took to the piano and found an organic love becoming a skilled instrumentalist.

Following her early education, Maryann found her life’s path was to devote herself to faith, community and world peace. At the age of 17, she joined the order of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She began serving others through various ministries. Her first mission was teaching at Saint Joseph’s Elementary School in Somerville. While studying and preparing to take her vows, she continued to study music and received a bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College and later, a master’s degree from Harvard University. Throughout her life, she shared her gifted talent of piano playing which led her to play for several congregations throughout New England.

When she renounced her vocation in 1961, Maryann continued to live her life with the values she had been brought up with in the Catholic faith. She remained in academia and became a Catholic School teacher, and taught grade school for many years. She also taught music in several colleges.

In her later years, Maryann became the family care giver for her mother and lovingly doted on her until her passing.

She was the sister of the late Florence Lopiano of California, Joseph Mecrones of Medford and Paul Mecrones of Lexington. Surviving Maryann is her caring cousin, Theresa Zuccola of Medford and many loving nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to attend at Oak Grove Cemetery Graveside Service in Medford on Saturday, November 23rd at 11am.
