Obituary of Sadie Banzy
Sadie Banzy, age 94, of Woburn and formerly of Burlington and Brooklyn, NY, passed away at Lahey Hospital on December 28, 2024. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward J. Banzy, with whom she had shared almost 30 wonderful years of marriage, prior to his passing in 2004.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the only daughter of the late Frank and Josephine Martinez. Sadie lived in Brooklyn for many years. While in Brooklyn she worked at Chemical Bank in Manhattan and would commute in by train every single day. She was an extremely talented seamstress, there were years that she made Halloween costumes, not just for herself but all her friends too. She enjoyed not only sewing, knitting, crocheting and cross stitching, but also teaching and passing down her talents for others to enjoy. At 42, while still living in New York, Sadie met the love of her life, Edward. The two were introduced at a wedding in Ohio, and it wasn’t long before they were married in 1974. Anyone who met them could see just how perfect they were for each other, and just how deep their devotion ran.
After Sadie and Edward settled down in Burlington, they wasted no time finding friends and activities to keep them busy in the area. They loved to go out dancing together and catch a show every chance they could at The Playhouse Theater in Danvers. They also enjoyed traveling and would take a cruise to the Bahama’s, or anywhere that had a warmer climate than New England. Following Edwards passing, Sadie continued to live an active and involved life. She had a group of girlfriends who loved to play Texas Hold Em’ together, and they would go to the Knights of Columbus twice a week, and to The Brook once a week to play together. They were such regulars that there was a table that was coined as “their table” that was designated for their outings. She also carried on with her traditions of taking her grandchildren out for birthday dinners, and just being a presence any way she could. Sadie was a devoted and loving woman who will be deeply missed by the many lives she touched.
Surviving Sadie is her stepson, Edward Banzy and his wife Pia of Woburn; her grandchildren, Alex Banzy and his fiancée Kaleigh Lund of Longmont, CO, and Amanda Banzy of Woburn. Maria Boyce of Brooklyn, NY, who was like a daughter to her, her children, Christa Miano, Michael Boyce and Joseph Boyce who lovingly referred to Sadie as “Nana”, as well as two nephews, Charles and Joseph Martinez. Sadie was also the loving sister of the late Charles Martinez.
Friends and family are invited to attend her visitation on Saturday, January 4th from 10 am until 11:30 am at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12 pm at St. Malachy Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington.
