Obituary of Mary Brooks
Mary E. Brooks, who owned a variety store with her husband, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday morning, January 29, 2014. She was 97 years old.
Mary was born in Waltham, the daughter of the late Patrick and Elizabeth Hoarde. She grew up in Waltham and was a graduate of Waltham High School and Burdett Business School. She married Elijah Brooks in 1945. Mary was an extremely energetic woman, who never seemed to age. She worked well into her 70’s. Over the years she had worked at Cummings in Davis Square, Somerville, EPI in Burlington, Matheson Higgins Congress Press in Woburn, as a cashier at Marshalls in Woburn. Mary and her husband Elijah had lived in Elijah’s home town of St. Louis Missouri for a number of years where they owned and operated a variety store.
Mary has made Burlington her home since 1961. She enjoyed gardening and maintaining her home. She enjoyed collecting Teddy Bears as a hobby. She was blessed with good health, independent nature, and the need to keep active. When she was not working around her home, in her kitchen, cleaning, she enjoyed going out to dinner, with her favorite destination being the Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Mary lived a long and happy life filled with family and friends. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Elijah J. Brooks. She was the loving mother of Charlene Gioiosa & her husband Robert of Medford and the late Donald Brooks. She was the sister of Julia Maloney of Ashland and the late Robert Hoarde. Mary was also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Saturday, February 1 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Friday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
