Obituary of George Brookings

George F. Brookings, a retired mechanic, passed away at the Winchester Hospital after a long illness on Sunday November 20, 2011. He was 80 years old. George was born in Cambridge the son of Canadian immigrants, the late Reuben and Emma Brookings. He grew up and was educated in Cambridge. He went to work with Russell’s Engine Rebuilding Company as a teenager, and remained with the business for over 40 years. He enjoyed his work and his fellow employees. George and his wife Edith settled in Burlington in 1964 to raise their 3 children. George was very content being in his home sharing the company of his family and friends. He enjoyed cooking and maintaining his home. He was always willing to lend a hand if a family member had an automotive problem. He was an avid saltwater fisherman and spent hours and hours on the rocks of Nahant chasing the perfect catch. He was a loving and concerned father and grandfather. His wife, Edith, was the love of his life and the center of his world. He continually showed his devotion to her in the way he cared and provided for her. They were blessed to be married for 62 years. George was the beloved husband of Edith Mae (Maron) Brookings of Burlington. He was the loving father of George F. Brookings, Jr., of McLean, VA, & his late wife Susan, Stephen Brookings of N. Billerica, and Linda Chasse & her husband Paul of Burlington. He was the brother of Lillian Gendron of Tewksbury, William Brookings of Wilmington and the late Theresa Boyd. He was the grandfather of Thomas Murphy, Ted, Matthew & Stephen Brookings. He was also survived by 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, November 23 at 11:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
