Obituary of Janet Peer

Janet Ann (Roy) Peer, a woman who devoted her life to her family and Catholic faith, passed away at her home after a lengthy illness on Sunday morning, April 6, 2014. She was 84 years old. Janet was born in Hartford, CT. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Frances Roy. She grew up in Malone, NY which was a small town approximately 12 miles from the Canadian border. She could look across the St. Lawrence River from her home. She was a graduate of Franklin Academy High School and then graduated from a business school in New York. She started working as a teller and quickly rose to Regional Manager for the Marine Midland Bank in NY. Janet had a deep Catholic faith and it was her faith that literally united her with her future husband Walter Peer for they met one Tuesday night at church as they both attended a Novena Service. They were married and eventually settled in Burlington in 1965 where they raised their 4 children. She worked as a clerk at Houghton Mifflin Company in Burlington for 25 years prior to retiring. She became active parishioner at St. Margaret’s Church, attended daily Mass, teaching CCD, and then being Director of the 6th grade religious education program for 20 years. Janet was very involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. She attended all their activities and events whether it was a hockey games, figure skating competitions, swim meets, golf matches or any other event or activity. She and her family were very active at the Burlington Country Club. She spent quite a lot of time with her grandchildren in her retirement years. She would take them out for picnics, make them her special grill cheese sandwiches, and often sit at the kitchen table and help them with their homework. She enjoyed shopping, meeting new people, reading, crocheting, and visiting friends. She enjoyed traveling, returning home to New York, visiting her family in Vermont, and her trips to Amish Country, Ireland, and Montreal. Janet not only believed in her faith, she also lived it every day. She was a strong role model to her family, setting high standards, strong values, and deep respect to others. Janet was the loving wife of 53 years to Walter C. Peer. She was the loving mother of Mary Rufo & her husband Massimo of Woburn, John Peer of Woburn, Kathleen Peer of Burlington and Dorothy Boutin & her husband Gary of Williston, VT. She was the proud grandmother of Angela, Michael, John & Marina Rufo; Nicole & John “Jake” Peer, Jr., and Kathleen “Katie”, Elizabeth & Benjamin Boutin. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, April 9 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Janet’s name may be made to St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington, MA 01803.
