Obituary of Roy Springer

Roy J. Springer, former owner of Springer Auto Services in Newton passed away on Sunday afternoon, January 7, 2007. He was 88 years old. Roy was born and raised in Newton, MA. He is the son of the late Roy L. and Annie Springer. After High School and during WW II he worked in the Charlestown Navy Yard repairing naval ships and submarines. He worked to earn his teaching certificate and taught for a number of years at the Salem Vocational High School. Roy and his wife Agnes settled in Burlington in 1954 where they raised their family. In 1957, Roy founded Springer Auto Services on Washington Street in Newton. He ran the Auto repair garage until his retirement at the age of 78. He was fortunate to have his 2 sons, Don and Stephen working side by side with him along with his two grandsons Jeff and Peter. Over the 41 years in business, he gained the trust and friendship of many loyal customers, who in some families spanned 3 generations. Roy enjoyed camping and traveling. He and his wife Agnes took several extended cross-country trips in their Motor Home. He enjoyed working around this house, yard and feeding the birds. Roy was a devoted family man and loved being around his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Roy is the beloved husband of Agnes (McDonald). He is the loving father of Donald & his wife Judith of N. Grafton, Stephen & his wife Karen of Saugus, Claire & her husband James “Larry” O’Leary of Boynton Beach, FL and Dennisport, MA, and Carol & her husband Myron Leiter of Wayland. He is the brother of Warren of NJ, Alice Daley of Newton, Fred of Orleans, and the late Gladys Allen. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, January 13 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington, at 11 a.m. Interment in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Roy’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Former owner of Springer Auto Services in Newton.
