Obituary of Dorothy M. Carey

Dorothy “Dot” Carey, a loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away after a long illness on Monday, January 5, 2015 surrounded by her family. She was 85 years old. Dot was born in Newton, as the youngest daughter of the late Patrick and Theresa O’Connor. She grew up in Newton and was a graduate of Newton High School. She earned her Associates Degree from Burdett College. She married Paul Carey and they settled in Burlington in 1957 where they would raise their three daughters. Dot loved flowers, gardening and romance and suspense novels. She was able to balance a career as a bank teller with caring for her family. She started her career after her children got older working for Lexington Trust, Shawmut Bank, which eventually became Bank of America. She enjoyed working at a small bank because it gave her the opportunity to know her customers personally. Dot was always in charge at home and made sure everyone in the family was well cared for physically and emotionally. She seamlessly managed the needs, concerns, wants at home with the demands of her job. She always placed the needs of her family before her own and made sure her children had every opportunity available to them including good educations and the tools and values to prosper on their own. Dot and her family spent many special times together at the family chalet near Black Mountain in New Hampshire where skiing was a passion of the entire family. During their retirement years Dot and Paul would spend their winters in New Smyrna Beach Florida where Dot loved to walk the beach. Dot and Paul took many trips together including a cross country trip across the country although the favorite was always their trips to Ireland. Dot was not one to sit idle. She enjoyed tennis, dancing, shopping. She was very proud of her three daughters and all their accomplishments and being with her grandchildren brought Dot so much joy! The relationship she had with her husband Paul made her life complete and seeing them together always brought a smile to everyone they met. Dot was the beloved wife of Paul W. Carey. She was the loving mother of Paula & her partner Linda Halbruner of Burlington, Patricia Wright & her husband Scott of Reading, and Pamela Gralenski & her husband Douglas of Gorham, NH. Sister of Katherine Sontag of North Conway, NH, the late Joseph, Leo, and Francis O’Connor. Proud grandmother of Jennifer Lund & her husband Patrick, Bryan Wright and Nicholas & Lauren Gralenski. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Friday, Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.
