Feisty, caring, loving, adventurous, stubborn, laughing, smiling, seething, devoted, curious, determined, giving. These are some of the many adjectives that come to mind when I think of my days teaching with Gloria. From battles with administrators who hadn't a clue how wonderful Gloria was as a teacher, to seeing her smiling when she knew she had succeeded at a difficult task, to learning everyday from her about life, to sharing tales and woes of caring for aging parents, to discussions about gardening, pets, people Gloria gave her all to everyone. It was a treat to know you Gloria.

I was a student of hers at Sharon high school between 1986 and 1990. The appreciation of her hard work with her students only grows over time. May she rest in peace.

A wonderful person, fantastic mentor and an even better colleague. Her enthusiasm for teaching, science and life in general earned her the nickname
"Hurricane Gloria." Rest well Doc.

As someone who learned from Dr. Deutsch in high school, I don’t think we appreciated at the time how wonderful a teacher she was. She was tough but great, and truly cared about her students. It took a few years, but when I was taking science courses in college, I recognized that she prepared us better for the future than any other teacher I had. I remain very grateful to her for really challenging and teaching us so well.

Oh, Gloria. I was so lucky to know you in many ways. First, you were my chemistry teacher in the days of slide rules and three-beam balances. Your lessons stayed with me, whether it was the power of factor labeling or the stories of chemistry and environmental discoveries. Your teaching helped me succeed in college. Then we become co-workers when I returned to Sharon High to teach biology. Finally, we became good friends, sharing the love of gardening, dogs, and independent lifestyles. Although we didn't keep in touch after I left Sharon High, I thought of you often, whether it was when I used your lessons to teach my students, or whether it was when I was digging potatoes in my garden. You inspired so many.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of "Doc Fitzgerald". Doc was my Sharon High School chemistry teacher and she was a major influence in my decision to pursue a career in chemical engineering. She will be missed and I am extremely grateful for her passion and great gift to inspire students.

As a fellow teacher at Sharon High School, I spent many a free moment discussing with Gloria the pros and cons of the New York Regents exams and the high standards of the education that we had both received going through the NY education system. I looked up to Gloria as a teacher who demanded the very best from her students and as a mentor who was always there to answer a question or to give me easy ways to set up my grade book in my early years at Sharon HS. As a chemistry teacher she was outstanding. I was fortunate that my daughter had the experience of being her student and I remember that Dr. Deutsch taught her the value of keeping a proper chemistry notebook and the importance of detailing ones findings. She was a very smart lady and I am so very sad that she had to battle ALS after leading such an incredible active independent life. She was one of my favorite fellow co-workers. Gloria- may you enjoy everlasting peace and know that you live on in my heart forever. G-d bless you!

Gloria was an inspiration to all students and colleagues; I worked at Sharon High School and witnessed the talents of Dr. Deutsch; my daughter was a beneficiary of her amazing passion for science and learning. She inspired my daughter to pursue her career in the health field and gave her the foundation to succeed so well in college and graduate school. The only notebook my daughter took to college was "the" Chemistry Notebook that Gloria recommend none of the kids throw out after high school. Wise suggestion.
Her feistiness was legend in the classroom, teachers' lounge, and faculty meetings. Her wit and humor were only matched by her intelligence and decency.
May her memory be for a blessing; she will never be forgotten by the legions of students whose minds and hearts were forever changed by having her as their teacher.

I am sadly reading just now of "Doc's" passing. She was far and away the most influential teacher I ever had, coaxing her students to high academic achievement with clear lesson plans and excellent laboratory experiences. I still have the recommendation she wrote me for college. She enabled me to practically coast through college freshman chemistry with her advanced class as well as teaching me how to use a slide rule. (Calculators were just making their entrance.) The answer to a problem was never the primary goal with her. One had to demonstrate mastery of the process in reaching that result for her to be satisfied. She made you want to learn. Despite the passage of 40 years since leaving Sharon High, I have thought of her often and wish to acknowledge that I and hundreds of other students are truly in her debt for the contribution she made to our development. I kept in touch with her for a few years after graduating and she was always asking about the status of other classmates. She was the finest example of what makes teaching noble.

As a young teacher at Sharon High School who was in awe of Gloria, I was saddened to learn of her passing. She will be remembered as an inspiration, both as a teacher and a person.
