Obituary of Walter J Carey
Walter J. Carey, Jr., a resident of Burlington since 1963, passed away the Woodbriar of Wilmington Nursing Home, following a brief illness. The beloved husband of 55 years of Rosemary (Finnegan) he was 85 years old.
Walter was born, raised and educated in Bloomfield New Jersey. He was the son of the late Walter and Laura Carey. After high school Walter went on to receive his Associates Degree as an X-Ray Technician. Walter was a Veteran of the Korean War serving his country in the United States Air Force. He was the recipient of the Japanese Occupational Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Walter worked as a Salesman for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals for many years. His territory was the North Shore of Massachusetts and he serviced the family owned and local pharmacies. He also worked as an Engineer for Teladyne. Walter was not one to sit idle and during his retirement years he worked at the local CVS store in Dennis as a Pharmacy Technician and with the Town of Burlington in the Facilities Department. Walter and Rosemary married in 1960 and settled in Burlington in 1963 where they would raise their two children. He was very involved in his children’s lives when they were growing up and coached his son Billy in youth basketball. They owned a vacation home in South Yarmouth for over 20 years. He had a great love of the ocean and boating. Over the years he always had a boat that varied pleasure crafts, cruisers, to sport fishing. Nothing gave him more pleasure than being behind his helm, smelling the fresh ocean air as he cruised the waters of Cape Cod, Essex River, and North Shore. He enjoyed his knowledge of seamanship as he was a longtime member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He taught boating Safety classes, performed vessel safety checks, and supported the Auxiliary’s mission of good and safe seamanship. With an ocean breeze, he enjoyed pleasure cursing both at Cape Cod as well in Essex. Walter was an avid golfer. He was always on the go playing tennis, racket ball, and recently found a new sport, pickle ball. He was a man of deep faith and was a devote Catholic. He could be seen at Saturday Masses at both St. Margaret’s and St. Malachy’s and was a former Lector at St. Malachy’s.
Walter was the loving and adoring husband of 55 years of Rosemary (Finnegan) Carey. He was the loving father of Susan Thompson & her husband Keith of Glastonbury, CT and William “Billy” of Burlington. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert. Walter was the proud grandfather of Conor, Marykate & Callan Thompson.
A visitation will be held at the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, May 16 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy Church, 99 Bedford St., Burlington at Noon concluding with Military Honors. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials in Walter’s name may be made to People Helping People, PO Box 343, Burlington, MA 01803.
