Obituary of Irene McDevitt

Irene A. McDevitt, passed away at the Lowell General Hospital, on Saturday morning, June 27, 2015. The beloved wife of the late James J. McDevitt, she was 80 years old. Irene was born, raised, and educated in Watertown. She was the daughter of the late Guiseppe and Mary Ranucci. After graduating Watertown High School Irene worked at Western Electric. Irene and Jim married and settled in Woburn in 1964 where they would raise their two children. While her children were growing up Irene worked part-time at Star Market in Burlington. However, her primary role was that of wife and mother. Irene, Jim and their children enjoyed spending there summers in Onset where they had many happy memories as a family. In 1985 Jim would retire and they would spend their winters in Brooksville Florida and the summers in Onset. Irene was not one to sit idle. She enjoyed playing bingo and occasional trips to Foxwoods. Golf was a sport she enjoyed playing with her husband. She was a talented artist and enjoyed oil painting. Irene and Jim travelled extensively taking many cruises and visiting such destinations as Ireland and Italy. She was a woman of deep faith and was a longtime parishioner of St. Barbara’s in Woburn prior to retiring to Onset. Saying the rosary was part of her daily routine. Her family was the most important part of her life and she was very proud of her two children and three grandchildren. Irene will be remembered for her love of family and a woman who was always giving of herself to others. Irene was the beloved wife of the late James J. McDevitt. She was the loving mother of Mary Sheehan & her husband Edward of Tyngsboro and James J. McDevitt, Jr. & his wife Ann of Atlanta, GA. Sister of Lorraine Cristello of Watertown & the late Catherine Needham, Frances Carrier and Thomas, Anthony & Vincent Ranucci. Proud grandmother of James Sheehan and Allison & Caitlin McDevitt. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, June 30 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 p.m. Interment will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne on Wednesday, July 1 at 1:00 PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers memorial’s in Irene’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
