Obituary of Eugene Powers

Eugene “Gene” Powers, a retired MBTA and City of Medford School Department employee passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, January 22, 2012. He was 81 years old. Gene was born in Medford, the son of Canadian immigrants, the late Nicholas and Mary Powers. He served in the Army during the Korean War holding the rank of Corporal and was attached to the 38th Field Artillery Battalion. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant for meritorious service. He returned home and worked for 25 years as a driver for the MBTA and then worked for over 20 years as a Building Custodian for the Medford School Department. Gene was the loving companion for 31 years of Ernestine LeBlanc of Burlington. He was the devoted father of Kim Fitzgerald & her husband William of Peabody and Linda Powers of Sanford, ME. He was the brother of William & his wife Marie of Woburn and the late Michael Powers of Somerville. He was the grandfather of William, Derrik, Scott, Shawna, Michael, and Michaela. Great-Grandfather of Shawn. He was also the former husband of the late Helen Currier. A visiting hour will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday, January 25 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at Noon. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. Memorials in Gene’s name may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143.
