Obituary of Janet Hurtz

Janet S. Hurtz, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at the Woburn Nursing Center after a prolonged illness. She was 87 years old. Janet was born in Wyckoff, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Garrett and Margaret Santhuysen. She grew up and was educated in Wyckoff. She was married in Patterson, NJ and raised her children in Beacon, New York. Her retirement years were split between Florida and North Carolina. Janet and her husband, John, were a team. They did everything together. They owned a small store in Beacon, NY called The Keenan's Corner Store. It was a simple store which was attached to their home, which made a truly family business. They worked 6 days a week and always closed for an hour and a half in the middle of the day to tend with family responsibilities. The store was their life and they were a big part of the community. They had many loyal customers who were like friends. In her limited free time, Janet had a beautiful sitting garden behind the store. She was also a talented seamstress. Her often children thought of her as “June Cleaver without the pearls.” She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and was so happy to be a part of her family’s life’s. Janet was the beloved wife of the late John C. Hurtz. She was the loving mother of Thomas Hurtz & his wife Carolyn of Fayetteville, NC and Nadine Spano & her husband Orlando of Burlington. She was the proud grandmother of Ellen Dixon & her husband Donald of Bolivia, Amy Hurtz & her husband Robert Tolg of Fayetteville, NC, Nicole Niedermeier & her husband Patrick of Burlington, Kristin Ferrara & her husband Christopher of Reading and Matthew Spano & his fiancée Nicole Viola of Boston. She was the great grandmother of Luke Dixon, Mairead & Georgia Niedermeier, and Autumn, Maxwell & Carmine Ferrara. She also thought of Leah Ovitt Hall of Crawfordville, FL as an added daughter to their family. Graveside Services will be held at the George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ on Saturday, September 26 at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials in Janet’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s’ Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
