Family Remembrance by Rachel We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Geno John Tomao. He was a humble man; he never liked to be the center of attention. In life and now in death, he wouldn’t want us to focus on the sadness of his death but instead the happiness in our lives. He lived a life that was full of joy, happiness and food. Although we will miss him, his smile, his loud laugh, his love, we take consolation in the good feelings of our memories.
On June 8, 1935 Geno entered this world into the loving arms of his mother, Rosario and his father Guiseppe Tomao. He was born and raised in Waltham, MA, loving brother of Anthony, Joseph, and Olga Tomao.
Geno was a lab technician at Raytheon, very dedicated to his profession and successful. It’s no secret that Geno loved to eat, so there is no surprise that he met his wife of 51 years, Charlotte, when going home with a friend from work to eat lunch. After two short years, they were married and started a family. They were blessed with two daughters, Rosemarie and Diane. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren; Charlie, Rachel, Matthew, Courtney, Madison and Ally.
Geno retired from Raytheon at 58 years old, which was well deserved. He promised Charlotte he would do all the laundry, clean the house, buy her fresh flowers as long as he didn’t have to work anymore. That lasted all of one week.
For those of you that knew Geno best, you know that he loved cars. In particular, he held a special spot in his heart for his 1998 Dodge Caravan minivan. He would always say, ..”Its an excellent vehicle, very good gas mileage and very few problems.” That was until he decided to work on it. Geno was not a mechanic, although he would proclaim otherwise. Charlotte took the van to the grocery store one day only to find antifreeze leaking all over the ground. When she opened the hood, there was the cap Geno never put back on the radiator, and if he were still here today he would still say, “...Charlotte, I am telling you that wasn’t me.” With a smile on his face of course.
Geno was a very simple man, quiet and content with an ice cold coors light. He enjoyed horse racing, and gambling; never risking more that he was willing to lose. He spent the majority of his years at the racetrack with his friends, sharing laughs and memories, dinners and drinks, love and friendship.
Today, here and now, we celebrate the life of Geno. Although he may not physically be here with us today, his spirit and love will continue to shine upon us. Each of you have a little piece of Geno inside of your hearts. It may be a vacation, a dinner, a dance, a song, a car ride or maybe he worked on your car one day which you would remember for sure. He was a wonderful man, respectful, honorable, and loving to all those around him with a pure heart. He will be missed but not forgotten. In time, today’s tears will turn to smiles of joy when you think back to all the good times shared with Geno.
In conclusion, Geno will be missed dearly. People like him are truly one in a million. Albert Einstein once said, “Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation.” So let us celebrate Genos life and continue his legacy. Thank you papa, until we meet again, we love and will miss you.
