Obituary of Idilia Couto

Idilia Martins de Barros Couto passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the age of 89. Idilia was an incredibly strong and independent woman who devoted her entire life to her family; she was born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde Islands. She was the daughter of the late Antonio and Ana de Barros. She gave birth to her six children while living in Brava and immigrated to the United States in 1966 where the family settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Idilia was a talented seamstress and craftswoman. She worked in the manufacturing industry for many years with her specialty being sewing, designing and making clothes. Her talents also included, needlepoint and embroidery where she made tablecloths, doilies and other fine items. Idilia was a phenomenal cook and you were lucky if you were the recipient of one of her home cooked meals or baked goods. She also enjoyed home decorating, loved music and in particular, attending Cape Verdean dances. Idilia took pride in providing for and raising her 6 children whom she had a wonderful and close relationship with. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The importance of Idilia’s family was evident when you entered her home; there were pictures upon pictures through the years of her family displayed lovingly throughout her home. Idilia was the wife of Vicencio B. Couto. She was the loving mother of Antonio Couto & his wife Weenna of Burlington, Maria Couto of Somerville, Anna Brown of Stoneham, Joseph Couto of North Andover, Lucinda Avlonitis & her husband Alexander of NJ and Odelisa Macedo & her husband Oldemiro of Malden. Sister of Elisa Costa of Dedham and the late John de Barros, Carmen Martins and Maria Fernandes. Proud grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of 2. Funeral held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, Burlington, MA (see addresses below). Visiting hours are on Monday, October 26th from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Last respects can be paid on Tuesday, October 27th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass at St. Margaret’s Church, Burlington, MA at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, MA. Following the interment, there will be a gathering at the Knights of Columbus at 570 North Ave., Wakefield, MA (adjacent to the cemetery). Edward V.
