Pedro M. Bucay, passed away on Thursday afternoon, November 5, 2015. The beloved husband of the late Prudencia (Jadormio) he was 83 years old. Pedro was born and raised in the small village of Licuan-Baay, Abra in the Philippines. He was the son of the late Villamor and Alicad Bucay. Pedro was a man of great pride and ambition, who strove to provide the best for his family. He finished his high school in Abra and then moved to Baguio City to go to college. This is where he met his wife. After finishing two years of college his mother got sick and died so he stopped school because of the lack of financial support and started working full time. While in the Philippines, he had a wide variety of jobs and careers. He was a professional boxer and the light weight division champion in Baguio City, Philippines. He was extremely proud of his boxing days, and often reminisced about them with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He owned his own grocery store and coffee house. With the Philippines holding one of the world’s largest gold reserves, Pedro worked as a miner and then went on to own and work his own gold mine. In May of 1980 Pedro came to the United States with his family to reunite with Prudencia who emigrated 5 years earlier and worked tirelessly to bring the rest of the family with her. They lived in Cambridge and Somerville before settling in Burlington. He worked at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge in their kitchen and cafeteria for many years before his retirement. He always wanted to be self-reliant and productive throughout his life. M Pedro was not one to sit idle and led a full and active life. He always did everything in a “Big Way.” He loved the outdoors whether he was fishing, hunting or simply working in his garden. His garden was like a small farm and could have anything from tomatoes and corn, to the extreme of having wild chickens. Pedro loved his roosters and captured and trained over 50 prized wild Hawaiian birds with his homemade traps. He was a great cook and everyone always looked forward to his meals. He made so much food you could feed a battalion of people. Pedro loved his family and friends and often expressed that devotion in his cooking, sharing his harvest, and the time spent together.
