Obituary of Elmer Enos
Elmer R. “Buddy” Enos, late owner of Enos Stables passed away at the Winchester Nursing Facility on Tuesday morning, December 15, 2015. He was 88 years old.
Elmer was born in Boston, the son of the late Manuel and Judith Marie Enos. He grew up and was educated in Allston and Brighton. He moved to the Winnmere section of Burlington in 1951. Elmer had worked as a rubber worker at BF Goodrich, as a technician for LeFebvre repairing and installing bank vaults and teller windows, retired as a sheet metal worker at Compugraphics.
As a youth, Elmer worked for Dan Steele’s Sulkie Racing Team and it was there that his passion for Sulkie racing began. He said that someday he would have his own horses and that eventually became true. His first horses were for his children. He had a barn and stable in his home and would train the ponies. His children would be the drivers and practiced racing around his home and then would compete at the local tracks. As the children became adults, he moved to the larger horses and took over the driver role as well. He raced his horses under the Enos Stables. He raced at Rockingham, Foxboro, Plain Ridge, and other tracks in the area. He had many horses over the years and always loved the underdog horses whom he would nurture and develop their racing spirit. Elmer had twin horses, Mo and Jo, which was highly unusual for racing and he is pictured with them in the Sulkie Hall of Fame at the Rochester Fair Grounds. Elmer was on the track, racing until his mid 70’s and then trained the horses until his early 80’s. He loved the sport of Sulkie Racing and he was not only able to fulfill his childhood dream, but made it his life’s passion. He was a fixture at the local tracks for decades.
Elmer was the beloved husband of the late Julia (Zwickert). Loving father of Elmer of Chelmsford, Judith of Burlington, Lorraine Hemmingson of Burlington & her late husband Carl, Susan Eicher & her husband Thomas of Billerica, Kevin of Burlington, and late Elaine Mullen. Brother of the late Manuel, Herbert, Leo & Lester Enos and Leona Mohan. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 10:30 to noon. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at noon. Interment will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Late owner, trainer, and driver of Enos Stables.
