Paul Thiel

Obituary of Paul Thiel

Paul E. Thiel passed away at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading on January 1, 2016. Paul was born in Boston, the son of the late Anton and Sadie Thiel. He grew up in Wilmington and was a 1953 graduate of Wilmington High School. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class. He served in the 1934th Communications Squadron and was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina, Kindley Air Force Base, Bermuda, and Howard Air Force Base, Panama. After his military service, he went to Boston University graduating in 1962 from the School of Public Relations and Communications. A few days later, Paul married the love of his life and fellow BU graduate, Mary Mastrangelo. They settled in Burlington and had three children. Paul worked at many High Tech companies along the Route 128 Corridor. He had a wonderful perspective on life. 'The best thing I ever learned was to love and be loved in return' was one of his favorite quotes. This was proven to be true by the many friends and relatives Paul so cherished and loved. He enjoyed golf and spent his retirement years living next to the Rockport Golf Club where he played and worked part time as a Starter. He also enjoyed painting, crossword puzzles, growing roses, working on home repair projects and living near the ocean. Paul's friendly and outgoing nature allowed him to make friends easily. His children knew that going to church or to the mall with him would take twice as long as it should, because seemingly dozens of people he knew would stop to chat with him. He was a man of great integrity who shared his sense of humor with everyone. Paul was so proud to see his children become adults and give him the greatest gift a child can give, grandchildren. It gives Paul’s family comfort to think that he is now reunited with his soul-mate and wife of over 40 years Mary (Mastrangelo) Thiel who passed away in 2006. He wanted to express his appreciation to all the doctors, nurses, aides and volunteers on the Neurology Floor of Massachusetts General Hospital, Salem Hospital's Cardiac Care Unit, Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Salem and especially at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House who all have lovingly cared for him over this past year. Paul was the beloved father of Paul Thiel, Jr. & his wife Lori of La Jolla, CA, Todd Thiel & his wife Sydney of Jamaica Plain and Linda Thiel & her husband Christopher Allen of Woburn. He was the youngest brother of Loretta Blum, Joseph Thiel and the late Anton Thiel. He was the proud grandfather of McClain, Madeline & Finna Thiel. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt., 128/95 Woburn side) on Monday, Jan. 4 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Joachim Church (Holy Family Parish) 56 Broadway, Rockport, MA on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend.
