Obituary of Albert K. Mayo

Albert K. “Al” Mayo, a man devoted to his family, faith and his country, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday evening, January 6, 2017. The beloved husband of 63 years of Mildred (Kreinsen), he was 90 years old. Al was the devoted father of Rick & his wife Cathy of Chelmsford, Donald & his wife Donna of Winchester, Paul & his wife Donna of Dracut, and Ken of Burlington. He was the cherished brother of Barbara Gosnell of FL and the late Betty Rapoza & Mary Doyle. Al was a loving grandfather of Lauren, Kristin, Julie, Erin, Brittany, Peter & Natalie. Al was born, raised and educated in Somerville. He was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Horne) Mayo. Al served two tours of duty serving his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from 1944 – 1946. He then proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 – 1952. Al performed various duties as an airplane and engine mechanic while in the European Theater of Operations. He was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Al was very proud of his service to his country and supported veterans groups and charities throughout his life. Al was a graduate of Boston University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. Al was a hard worker and took pride in providing for his family. He worked at Raytheon in Waltham in the Power Tube Division for 40 years. He was very mechanically inclined. There wasn’t anything he could not fix and even had a small machine shop side business in the early 1960’s and 70’s. His mechanical aptitude made him perfect for his job at Sears in the hardware department where he worked part-time for 25 years. He was a great asset to the department and a natural at giving advice to all his customers. Al married his wife Mildred on September 13, 1953 – it was the same weekend that John F. Kennedy and Jackie married. They settled in Burlington in 1956 where they would raise their family and become part of the community. Al was part of the Volunteer Fire Department in Burlington for many years. He was a longtime member of St. Malachy’s Parish in Burlington. He was very involved in the church, being one its very first parishioners and was an usher at the 4 PM Mass at St. Malachy’s for decades. He was well liked and respected by all the members of the Church. Al loved his home. He had a garden that was like no other growing strawberries, string beans, tomatoes, rhubarb, grapes and radishes. He took pride in his garden and loved to share the fruits of his garden with family and friends. Al and his family loved to travel. They had a camper trailer and one summer went cross country for five weeks. They also enjoyed vacationing at Point Sebago, York Beach, and Bay View Camp Ground in Bourne. Al was proud of his four sons and all of their accomplishments. He was a hands on father always being part of their lives. His 7 grandchildren brought him great happiness. Al and Mildred shared over 63 years together and were inseparable. They shared a great love story and instilled in their children the values that were important to them of family and faith.
